  1. I've been trying to mess with facebook stuff for sometime and the documentation for it just plain sucks. I'm looking to make a simple app that updates the status of the user. Does anyone have any advice?

The documentation on it is fine, I made quite a complicated one (never released it) just through that wiki :S

There are some demo applications around, footsteps I think one is called. Open that up and you'll easily see how to do it.

As far as I can tell, you can write an application that is fast and integrates closely with FB, or you can write an iframe application that has very limited features.

Footsteps made no sense to me, I don't even get what it does!

Also, I am very good with PHP and had no trouble writing it, I just couldn't find what I was supposed to be calling that I wasn't. My app was failing silently. ARRRG! You have made me worked up just thinking about it!

I think it's just like any other enviroment or language that you're looking to break into. There are alot of of tutorials, wiki's and what not out there, you just have to dig until you find one that clicks with you.

Here is a tutorial from sitepoint that you may or may not have seen yet.

Good luck, and hope to see your first app on facebook.

I know for me, all the wiki tutorials were circular. They would use things and just reference another page, which led back to the tutorial.

  7. Exactly, they would talk on and on about waht you could do with facebook apps, but never actually show you how to do it.
