I'm a newbie at this forum, anyway! I've been doing a ton of searching lately for helps in getting my slightly antiquated HTML pages looking more up to date. I read where you can get free templates for this, if you are like me and don't know much about markup languages like CSS and would never dream of trying to write it! When I found this site I was awed by all the gorgeous templates you people have created. I wish that I could do that!!

I'm hooked on metamorphosis' layouts, they are sooooo lovely! But none of them fit my screen! It's just ordinary sized, 19 inches I think. Is there any way to alter a layout just so that it will work on a smaller screen? I can find the exact measurements (what is given when my computer boots up) if that would help in answering my question.

    thank you

    Hello Rosebud

What you're referring to is the screen resolution. not the physical size of the screen. The resolution is the number of pixels that are displayed. It looks as though metamorph's templates are designed for a minimum resolution if 1024x768, which is pretty much the minimum used these days, only about 5% of Web users seem to be using anything less than that these days. You should definitely consider adjusting your resolution, especially for a 19" monitor (you can do this by right-clicking on your desktop and going to Properties, or Personalisation, depending on what version of Windows you're using).

If you'd still like to modify the width of a design... yes it can be done, usually very easily. Which template did you have your eye on?

Hi Greg....Yes of course, screen resolution, I am kinda new with that terminology...I've been doing this for 5 years yet never learned what I should have been learning! I'm in a habit of thinking of 'resolution' in terms of photography...

Anywho....right click on desktop....oh wow! I did that recently...for some reason...and I don't know why, or where I saw the directions...umm, hold on a sec....desktop....yeah, mine is 'properties'....umm, oh, there it is, 'settings'... right!! I've done that before....there is a little slider thingy, very easy to re-set. Mine was down to 800x600...and I think the reason I've left it set that way was my eyesight, 800x600 makes pages easier to read in general. But, if resetting to 1024x768 will allow me to use those gorgeous larger layouts....I'll leave it that way for that purpose!

I haven't quite made up my mind yet which design to settle on....I've only been searching for just a few days now...and the choices are so numerous!! But, could you explain just how to go about modifying a design's width by using an example such as....weeelll, there is that one with a huge rainbow I'm leaning toward... but they are all gorgeous...

There are a couple others I'm considering, one is "water spill" and the other is on the same page, I think, it's a paper-texture kind of layout with shell-like designs along the top... and both are the wider resolution. Time for me to do a little experimenting, if you can advise....

    thanks muchly,
    rosebud

Addendum to above: Sorry, I named the right artist but the wrong website, in referring to the layout with the rainbow...my bad...

Let's make this simple. Take for example, metamorph's "hills" layout, how would I resize that one for 800x600 res?

When you use dial-up and use a 800x600 resolution, you aren't meant to be using the internet. Having both those things puts you in about 1% the market. A section people don't both making exceptions for.

Nothing against you, I thought you might just want to know that many things aren't going to look right, or even work on dial-up at 800x600.

Point taken...and now that I know how to easily change the resolution, everything should be fine! Sometimes I would rather shift down to 800x600, but that's just personal choice. The rest of the time I can leave it up at 1024x768 or higher. :-)

Yup, most people aren't using dialup anymore, but there are a few of us who don't have a choice. I know of certain persons who even live so far out in 'the sticks' that they don't even have the option of getting DSL...

One of my best friends has dial up. He lives in a fairly good part of down, but it is a very old part of town. No DSL, just dial up. With a 19" monitor, you should set your monitor to the highest possible. You may think it is hard to read, but you just aren't used to it. After a week, you won't know the difference. Unless you really need the glasses :D
