I know this is a subject that keeps popping up again and again, but a friend of a friend is looking for free hosting. It's for a non-profit organization and hopefully just a temporary measure till there are some funds available. So, my question is: any recommendations?

For a non-profit I would ask a few paid hosting providers if they would be willing to provide their services for free. There are probably a few out there that would do it in exchange for a link in the footer or something.

If their needs are not great they could sign up with http://www.000webhost.com/. A while ago someone here suggested signing up with them for free hosting and I gave it a try and set up this site - http://wdn.site90.com/. So far I encountered very few problems. Later if they got funding they can sign up for regular hosting which will provide more service.

    @ conner
Yea I know its all set up for php and that's cool and all
so i just renamed the index.php file and uploaded my index.html to the root with the sub directories and it works fine I left all the php stuff in there in case i understand it and want to use it in the future, but for now I'm very comfortable with standard's compliant flat files.

  9. Jan: What is the non-profit, and what are their current hosting needs?

Conner, I’m not sure what you mean by funny PHP restrictions though with chmod. I do know they provide PHP5 including sqlite. They also provide MySQL but I found that it is not too reliable. I’m using 000webhost to test my odCMS project which only use flat files and found out that FTP and PHP have their own permission. Perhaps that is what you were referring to?

@Aaron: It's a women’s organization called Saheli Women’s Resource Centre. They are involved in mobilizing support for policy and law changes regarding issues such as violence against women, equal rights in matters such as succession, and lots more. They've had a lot of success in the past, and it's not difficult to imagine the importance of groups like this in a developing country.
As for hosting needs, they haven't been specific, though I'm trying to find out, but they basically want a static site with information about themselves and a place to put up their numerous reports and publications.

  12. If they have reasonably low requirements, I may be willing to host them. I don't offer cut-rate hosting plans like a lot of places (mine usually start at about $40/mo, but they are extremely reliable cloud-based hosting). Again, depending on their requirements, I might be willing to host them and write it off as a donation, assuming their a registered non-profit. Contact me

Thanks for the offer, Aaron. I will put them directly in touch with you. I've only told them that you *may* be willing to host them and no promises, so feel free to turn them down if you so feel.

  14. Good to see this thread, I'm consulting work for someone that is trying to do a website with 0 expenses and I've never heard people recommend a free host before. So I'll pass the word on about 000webhost.com
