Posted By: wfiedlerFor unexperienced users/clients I'm always in search for the most possible simple CMS. It should be easy to set up (in minutes) and to maintain. * flat file based (no mod_rewrite) * two menues (top and left or right) * add/delete pages * simple file management for images and files (upload and delete) * inline editing with FCKeditor or Tiny MCE (with AJAX or e.g. jQuery), when logged in => Example without WYSIWYG. * simple gallery with lightbox effect * simple template management using some PHP snippets for fast including the content/functions in a CSS/XHTML template That's all!
I just completed the first version of odCMS with the helps from Wolfram and Alec. Wolfram provided most of the front-end layouts and Alec helped by adding an admin interfaced using LyteBox. You can download a copy and try it out yourself. The installation and setup is very simple. Unpack the downloaded file and put the unpacked files in a directory of your choice. The system is set up with a user named demo and three members are included: guest for public access admin for site administration and document for documentation To access the system you simply enter the path of your installation. In order to add, update, and delete contents you must make sure all files and directories under users are readable as well as writeable. Please provide comments here or here. Thanks.

Looks good but I've got a question. What are the server requirements for this? Looking at the download, I see both asp (Windows) and php (*nix) files.

Included in the package are fckEditor and LyteBox. Perhaps those files are part of those programs. The server requirements should be minimal since the CMS does not use database, just flat files as indicated by Wolfram. You can try out the odCMS here if you do not wish to install it.

Since we're talking software here, what type of license are you folks using with this package?

odCMS is a project in response to wfiedler’s request for a simple CMS. Read this thread for more information. I took on the challenge by creating a CMS based on Ben’s Barnyard BBS using the functions from my project TML. The main objective of this project is to keep it simply and small, no more than 50k. The project is belonging to Wolfram so he can decide on the licensing issue. Currently you can download it and use it for free. Giving back any modifications made is appreciated.

Some responses would be much appreciated. Please test it and make your reports on bugs, suggestions, etc. Thanks in advance! - Wolfram

Although this CMS will be small and simple but it will have functionalities that use the OD resources, mainly members contributed designs. For example, the design to theme can be done less than ten minutes. Currently it is done offline but functions will be added where it can be done online if desired. Here is a theme that I converted from the Garden Contest.

This looks really good. I have never really used a CMS before, although I have been wanting to for some time now. That is why I got excited when you announced you would be coding this one. As a total novice are you going to produce a tutorial on how to develop a template or current layout to suit the CMS? If you could put one together that would be very much appreciated. I shall have a better look at the CMS later today.

I won't decide on the licensing issue on my own. It's also Tom's decision, because he works hard on the project. We will see, when it's finished, which license we chose. We still need responses. Come on guys! -Wolfram

Thanks umike for your interest in odCMS. There will be tutorials and other documentations about the system as the project progresses. Hopefully those notes will help turn you from a total novice into an expert in very little time. I’m currently developing functions to convert designs into themes. Together with the tutorial I’m sure you can do the conversion yourself. My thinking of the licensing issue is this – give OD ownership of the CMS. This way perhaps OD can charge a fee, say a dollar a year, for using the system. If enough people use it then it might generate enough money to provide hosting. Of course odCMS may not get to the point where people willing to pay a fee for using it with just Wolfram and me. That’s why we need responses from the community.

Nice Not the CMS for me, but nice and modern looking anyway. I'll try more, when there's some intructions how to use and theme it. --- by the way. i did "install" it to my server, and now it's stuck to the empty documentation page =)so it cannot be used, but it was nice looking until that.

Jason, the main goal is keeping the CMS small in size, less than 50k as per Wolfram’s requirement. I’m currently adding a design into theme conversion feature, which I believe will exceed slightly over the 50k number. Unless Wolfram changes his requirement a deep menus will not be possible for this CMS. Jonathan, sorry to hear that. Can you tell us why this CMS is not for you? Perhaps we can make some adjustment to the system so that it might satisfy you. Also can you give me the link to your installation? I would like to see why you got stuck with an empty page. Thanks. BTW, documentation will be forthcoming. It will be at this location: http://odcms.ztml.org/docs/

No problem Jason for later updates. A deep menu function with some vertical or horizontal flyouts would be cool. But let us make it first fully functional and then we will see. Be patient...

Hi guys. I have had a play around with it and love it. So far so good. I shall look forward to the tutorials and hopefully using this to put a couple of sites together. Keep up the good work.

Thanks ukmike for your interest. Currently I’m working on the designs into theme conversion feature which you will need to set up your own sites. Hopefully I’ll get that done in the next couple days and I€™ll have some tutorial go along with it.

Nice looking cms, but as Urgenus said its not for me. Personally I hate the floating admin menu- cant see the point of it myself and it seems very jumpy when changing from 1 tab to another and it put me off straight away. Why no mod_rewrite?? or are you thinking about making that an add-on?? Makeit have an inbuilt html editor, and make fck a choice to upload if people want to use it. Actually make everything apart from the core files optional, and get people to upload them if the want them - just make it so they can be enabled from within the admin I know its only a first release, but personally I think there are flat file systems that are better than this and do it in a size that is not much larger than the 50k limit for the main install Hopefully though it will get much better, so keep up the work and I'll try it again at next release Ian

Nice looking cms, but as Urgenus said its not for me. I’m sure many people will feel the same. We will try our best to make this CMS that will benefit some people. Makeit have an inbuilt html editor, and make fck a choice to upload if people want to use it. There is an option where you can create a different admin interface. For example, using document template will not load the LyteBox so you would not have the floating admin menu which you dislike. Why no mod_rewrite?? or are you thinking about making that an add-on?? If enough people make that request we will add that into our To-do list. Makeit have an inbuilt html editor, and make fck a choice to upload if people want to use it. fckEditor was the default editor but Wolfram decided to use WYMeditor instead because of its smaller size. Later we will have an editor selection option which will include fck. Actually make everything apart from the core files optional, and get people to upload them if the want them - just make it so they can be enabled from within the admin One of the features of odCMS is to allow user to select which templates to use. Right now the templates are use mostly for generating pages with simple contents. Later we will have templates that can display gallery images, calendar events, and so on. I know its only a first release, but personally I think there are flat file systems that are better than this and do it in a size that is not much larger than the 50k limit for the main install Can you give us the name of those systems? Perhaps we can include those features that make them better than ours. Hopefully though it will get much better, so keep up the work and I'll try it again at next release Our next release should be soon. This will include the designs into themes conversion feature.
