Sean, the clicking for Alexa rankings.....do you need to click and let the total page load before re-clicking, or just hit the reload button continuously with letting the full page load.

Do people really have much time for this?

  3. NickyD: Just a simple refresh is enough, and you don't need time. Just download the alexa Firefox addon and the "reload every" Firefox addon. Open your site and set it to refresh every 5 seconds (once the page is fully loaded it will give it 5 seconds and reload). If you really want to make progress fast, open 5 or 6 pages in different tabs and set them ALL to reload.

**I'm not saying you should do this, but it's certainly easy enough**

Having said all that, the Alexa rank for this site is under 30k, and the Compete ranking is just over 51K. That's actually reasonably close and means it's probably not artificially inflated (at least not much). Compete uses different algorithms, different stats collection methods, etc (and they seem to be slower moving, not letting a site rise or fall near as quickly).

@Aaron: I also recommend people not do this, which is part of the reason why I didn't post specifics on how to do it because I lot of people already do it and now watch how many Alexa ranking's change after your comment ;)

However since you have posted very detailed instructions on how to do it, now the web as we know it will implode ;)

I bet donuts to dollars if we watch NickyD's Alexa ranking (and a few others who ask about SEO a lot in the OD forum) we will see Alexa rankings 'improving' all over in the near future.

Personally I've never really put a lot of thought into the Alexa ranking, especially since it's always been so easy to game but a lot of people still like to use it as a gauge on how well a site is doing. Maybe now that you've posted how to game it, Alexa might fix the issue... but probably not since it's been around a very long time.

Due to a glitch, new designs are not on the front page. Joe has a solution. I have no ETA for that

Thanks for the heads up, however it would really good of Joe (LobsterMan) or Ethan (both admins) to drop in the forum, if even for 10 seconds to comment and let everyone knowing what's going on, especially if a fix is in the works with an ETA since after you and I talked, it's a pretty easy fix.

  7. @sean I suppose, I think the system is so flawed that it's already useless.

As for NickyD's site, it already shows an Alexa ranking of around 141k and a Compete ranking of about 819k. That's a huge discrepancy, so it's already pretty inaccurate.

i heard rumors that the alexa ranking may be something easy to tick but i didn't think a company putting so much value in itself would use such primitive technique for rankings. well, if the above is true than the ranking mehod is obsolete and i don't think google or any giant keeps account of it.

I don't think I will do it ....at least for now. My Alexa ranking probably has no impact on what I do.....but I have always been curious as to how others have done it. I have seen some really lame sites, with nothing to offer, and very good Alexa rankings.

    Thanks for the analysis, Aaron.
    Don't remember asking for it.

Aaron, I can see large discrepancies between many sites here from members, but I would not point that out if they did not ask for it.

  11. NickyD: I wasn't saying anything bad about your site (or you), just that Alexa is highly flawed. The only thing Alexa shows (at best, when no one is gaming the system) is how many ALEXA TOOLBAR USERS go to a specific site. Since so many people here have the toolbar (because we're all web designers or developers) it stands to reason that many of the sites that we all visit will have these kinds of discrepancies. It just means that you get a higher percentage of ALEXA TOOLBAR USERS than you do of overall internet users.
