hello folks! Hiya Tom W, how are things? it's been ages since you posted here and I'm just wondering how you came to the conclusion that OD is in trouble?

as for the set up here using WordPress... I'm not so sure it really is the best system and I agree it could be better. I really wish we could have something similar to Frank's set-up at OSWD..I really like that site and I'm saddened everytime I think about that wasted site

@arwen: OSWD is custom coded 100% but Frank also has to do a lot of things manually, that is when he does updates which hasn't been in forever.

When OD went up, as you know being a founding member, we all worked our butts off for a couple weeks straight to get what we have running today.

I agree things could be a lot better but it would take quite a bit of work to do a 100% custom back end and be able to import all the current content, members, etc and not have any quirks.

I don't have the sweat equity in me anymore to do it, Joe is also really busy and Christopher is on and off with his various personal things... life in general basically.

If someone is interested in working on a OD back end, version 2.0 so to speak, let me know and we can plan something out, but it would need to be donated time, we can't pay someone to code and/ or help code a new back end.

  3. NO pay is understandable... imagine what this would do for someones portfolio!

If you're serious about wanting to rebuild this place, then why not go and throw MediaWiki out on the server and lets start getting some things down in public. Figure out what's wanted, what's needed, etc etc.

The lets find out who are the developers? Who writes PHP, who does good front end work, who's a SQL god. Once that's done, have someone setup a subversion repository on the server and lets start getting some people lined up on the different parts and then start banging away on it. Aigile development, weekly reviews from the users. Keep things tight and on track.

There's been a lot of talk, but not much public action. I'm sure there are more than enough people here who have the time, and the skill to build something together. Let's just do it.

KattKern, I agree that OD is a social network with community contributed designs and stimulated discussions. Again my proposal is simply offering the designers an additional mean to showcase their works.

Hiya Karen, things are not doing well. My project is somewhat stalled at the moment so I thought I could get it moving with some help here. I visit here regularly but was not able to post any comments because I forgot my password (Reset Password function did not work for me and neither is registering as a new member). Luckily I found the password in one of my old computer. When I learned that Sean might be leaving, Joe and Christopher are not too involved lately I thought that this site might like the other two but Sean has assured me that won't happen. BTW, I can set up a site for you too if you like to try out this network.

Sean, I love to help out in any form of development but it has to be using ztml though. I have been working on this project for over seven years now so that is only thing I know. I'm retired. Even though I have the time but I'm babysitting one of my grandsons full time so I can only do this part time. I'm not looking for any financial compensation or enhancing my portfolio. Looks like you got papab30 all excited already.

Since I posted this topic two weeks ago noted that openwebdesign.org has not added any new designs since May and this week they added over two hundreds. Coincidence or they read this topic?

Coming to this late as always, sorry but I think Pete was treated unfairly too and he's not the only one. Anyway enough about that. I say go for it Tom. Things can always be better. I'm too busy to help out but keep us informed of any progress.

Moving to another site I thought would be good but... This site has so much power already and we need to just find how to restart it.

First of all we need people who re actually going to organize things and lead, administrators. Sean is a great admin but I think having more people will keep things more active.

I would be interested in learning another cms if it is updated well and has a ton of features already. No point in getting something without the features available.

Thanks Ainslie for your support. Hopefully this will add some value for the community. I'll report if there are progress. I created a site for you. Play with if you can find some time and give me suggestions if any. Thanks.

Right now the system only has four major components – Blog, News, Calendar, and Galley. More can be added if you or anyone here would like to help out. I also created a site for you. Take a look and let me know if this has any potential of serving this community.

Thanks Lewis. You can help by using the site that I set up for you and give me some feedback and suggestion.

Hopefully this network is not going to be complicated. Basically the network consists of sites created by my system for the members of this community and the members will be given the ownership of the sites. Each site will be used to showcase the designs by that owner. The designs will be converted into themes where you can sign up as a member of the site and use those themes. The members and themes can be copied into another site by using the copy functions thus you can join different sites without recreating the contents.

Tom: the site you set up for me is endless loading. And how do I use it? Login, username, password...? I have no idea at the moment. BTW: I'm an OD member. I don't support OWD anymore . Wolfram

I'm not sure what you mean by endless loading. The page should stop loading once the top bar is displayed.

You can use it by logging in as <i>wfieldler</i> (password is the same). Once you're logged in you can add more pages into the main section as well as add pages into each main section. The page can be static content, blog, news, calendar, gallery, or linked content.

You can also log into admin's account (password is admin but do change it to protect your site) and use the administrator functions where you can download templates from other sites. You can also copy users from other sites too.

Thanks for pointing out the difference. I've to remember <b>OSWD</b> (original), <b>OWD</b> (open web design), and <b>OD</b> (open designs).

Ah now I see, but it takes really endless until the top bar is loaded. I have a fast internet connection and mostly I'm using FF. What's the reason?

The top bar is used to display a standard set of links search, login/sign out, member listing, themes, and others as needed. I use <b>iframe</b> so that the top bar can be easily incorporated into a page without modifying layout. I have not encountered such problem as you described nor has anyone reported it. You are the first. I'll look into this a little more. Thanks for reporting it.

BTW, I'm looking for developers to help out this project too. If anyone can think of a way to display standard content without the use of iframe would be wonderful.

Oops... I need to apologize to Tom and to everyone else out here for my prolonged disappearance :shamed: If I haven't completely blotted my copybook, I'm still interested...

I've not gotten much feedback about how to construct this network so I'm continuing building it my adding designers. This is a slow process by doing it alone but nevertheless I probably will have everyone's designs here eventually. Right now if you can just give me some suggestions and I'll try to add them into the network. Thanks.

I recently moved the project into this site:

How does one log in to see what's behind the scenes? I don't remember setting a password or anything...

I decided to protect each site with password for the admin account but the member can log on by using the same username for the password. You can change that if you want to protect it. If you sign up as a new member you can enter your own password.
