As a few people know, I'll be stepping down as an admin on Open Designs, probably within the next 45 days or less pending getting a few things cleaned up around here. There has also been talk about changing out some of the board members too, so I wanted to start a new thread and ask who might be interested in becoming an admin or a moderator. A couple things to keep in mind when chiming in on this thread, please keep it on topic and your comments brief. A good admin or moderator for OD would be someone who has history with the Open Design community, maybe from OD, OSWD (my history goes back to June 2002) or OWD. Someone who has experience being a moderator on previous sites, who is mature and somewhat level headed and can look at both sides of conflict. Being able to check in on the forum on a regular daily basis. The more the better. Having some coding background would be of use as well to help with new features or to clean up current code. If you are currently a moderator on OD and have interest in becoming an admin, get into contact with me off forum to discuss. If you are currently a moderator on OD and want to step down, also contact me so we can handle that too. A lot of things have been on hold or slow in happening around here. There is no need to point fingers or get upset, we just need to get things back on track again. I think by bringing in some fresh blood and changing things up with the board members, a lot of good can happen around OD. If you are interested in any of this, post a comment showing your interest and maybe link to your site or a site you are a moderator on or have been in the past. You can also contact me off forum if you'd like. More to come...

Good start. Some changes may be positive. Currently, I am a moderator here. I would like to continue doing it as I enjoy this site a lot, but have no interest in being an administrator.

  3. I'm interested in helping out. This is a community I believe in. I have quite a bit of PHP and even WordPress specific experience. I'm currently on vacation in San Diego with my family (wife and son), we're actually stopped at a little coffee shop on our way to Sea World, so I'll post back here with more information on Monday when I return to work.

I'm currently a moderator here too. I believe that this community is amazing. We have some work to do, we have some current issues & I believe that these things will be overcome. I also know that everyone can't be satisfied all the time. I'm interested in staying on as a moderator. I'd shoot for admin, but I have other projects that I'm an admin & developer of, as well as my personal projects, client projects and, oh ya, a wife & 4 sons. :)

Sean, I'd be interested in helping out where I can. I'm a php coder (lead developer of Zikula, long time member (although a relatively quiet member) of opendesigns and its predecessors, a forum admin at the zikula forums. Having gained a lot from opendesigns (being a non-artistic coder type!) i'd like to give something back. -Mark

Thank you all so far for your replies and keeping on topic and brief. I won't be commenting on this thread for a little bit to allow for others to also comment. Thanks again.

Being able to check in on the forum on a regular daily basis. The more the better. Daily? how about at least 2 times a week Having some coding background would be of use as well to help with new features or to clean up current code. So I take it Mods will be given more responsibility then? I think you need to let us know what the mods will and won't be doing - so they know what they're in for. If you are currently a moderator on OD and have interest in becoming an admin, get into contact with me off forum to discuss. Will admins be voted in? If you are currently a moderator on OD and want to step down, also contact me so we can handle that too. A lot of things have been on hold or slow in happening around here. I agree If you are interested in any of this, post a comment showing your interest and maybe link to your site or a site you are a moderator on or have been in the past. I also think there should be the positions of " OD Sh#@ Stirrers" like myself who neither qualify for Admin or Moderator but somehow have a lot to say for no apparent reason and make threats against neighbourhood cats. You can also contact me off forum if you'd like. More to come...

@Pete: As for what moderators will do or not do will be determined a bit later as backend features are being fine tuned as I type this but things like moderating the forum, design approval, etc will be on the list. As for admins as well as moderators, they will both be voted in. The purpose of this thread is to see who has an interest in it and after a few days of getting replies, we can move on to the next phase of letting people know what their duties would be and if they are game, then we can have a vote.

I'd be interested in helping out either as an Admin or Moderator. I am probably one of the most habitual visitors of the site and board. I don't have experience with moderating any other boards, but I think I've got what it would take if the community will have me. As an administrator I would probably focus most on building the structure and helping with the idea formulation. Obviously, I'd love to see a great programmer land an admin role.

  10. I am interested in becoming a moderator. I have a lot of experience with XHTML and CSS. I have My CIW Associate, Professional Site Designer, I am a certified SEO Professional, I also Have my A+ Certification. I am learning PHP at a quick pace... (BLog Brighter - Still Under Developement) Unfortunately, I have no experience mod'ing any other forums.... As for checking into the forums regularly, I am always logged in and check in five or six times a day.

I would like to be a moderator. I have had many small moderator positions such as Kwix Host, where I am Graphics Staff. I have good experience in XHTML and CSS although I haven't done very much work lately and I probably should. I come to this site often as it is one of my favorites.

I would be interested in being a moderator and would like to be able to contribute a bit to the wish list features people ask for. I am good with the PHP.

I'll put my name down for it..

I've lurked since OSDWD I never joined the forums because of all the problems they had. I came here and decided to join.
Someone who has experience being a moderator on previous sites, who is mature and somewhat level headed and can look at both sides of conflict.
I'm not gonna brag about being level headed or anything like that, that's a matter of opinion. However, past mod experience: Freewebs Forums (For the webhost freewebs) [Forum now defunct] Designerfuse.com I have also been very active on atleast eight forums. CT DF FWF FWFC DP TF OD and VH come to mind.
Being able to check in on the forum on a regular daily basis. The more the better.
2 or 3 times a day on weekdays. 6-7 on weekends if i'm at home.
Having some coding background would be of use as well to help with new features or to clean up current code.
Though i'm by no means a master I am very profficient, and a master of using the documentations to code complex pieces. Anways, to sum it up I'm essentially the same as the majority of people who will apply. I'm just a regular member who loves the community and wants to be more involved. The only difference between me however is I am a designer (I don't think most of the current mods / currently applying members activly design. Secondly I represent the designer population pretty well. You'll notice in the past discussions held there my opnions are held by almost all designers (no absolute claims however). Thanks, Sean.

Now that's a difficult thing. Half of me says I might as well stop being a Mod because this site isn't working but then again with new Admins things might get under control and it could be good. My heart doesn't want to let me let this slip away. I still would love to see it work. :bakie: [Edit] Ok, I'm happy to stop on if needed but it's up to you guys!

Site is working, just not to some member's expectations. It's far from perfect, but it's going better than previous open template sites IMO.

Please keep this thread on topic. If you are a mod and want to possibly become an admin, chime in. If you want to possibly be a moderator, chime in. If you are a moderator and want to step down, do like yugnats did and chime in. This thread isn't for discussing what works or doesn't work with current administration, how to improve things or the site in general, so anything not specifically on topic will be removed. I also just removed a couple comments which were somewhat off topic. Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

Well, I am currently a moderator, though to be honest, I have been a little off and on lately due to "life happening", as it sometimes does. Anyway, I'm relatively regular -- log in at least once every other day most of the time. I do have modding experience on one other site (more than 2 years now, but it's a relatively small community); as for coding experience, well, in XHTML and CSS. I'm fairly level headed and tend not to fly off the handle in public. With mid-30s catching up, I'd say I'm relatively mature too, though I'm sure that's not what you meant, Sean! I'd leave it up to you lot whether you want or need me as a moderator. I'm happy to be one, but I'm also happy to step down if someone more deserving should want to take over.

So it looks like 3 to 4 moderator slots will be likely to get new blood. Obviously all staff will be voted on, so that no current staff are immune to the will of the people. The only person whose position may not be negotiable would be Christopher, because we can't replace all of our admins at once.

  21. Ok, I'm back at home ("office") and I'm at my desk. I had said "I'll post back here with more information on Monday when I return to work" so this is it. I'm not sure exactly what information everyone wants, so I'll try to just give a quick overview:
    • I'm 26 years old.
    • I'm reliable/dependable.
    • I work from home doing web programming (mostly PHP), which gives me the flexible schedule I want, as well as no boss looking over my shoulder telling me I shouldn't be chatting on the forums.
    • I usually check the forums daily (often more than once), but if you are looking for guarantee that I will check at least once a day, I can't give that. Life happens.
    • I've been using computers since I was a little kid, built sites back when animated gifs were cool.
    • I have about 5 years experience programming PHP professionally
    • About 2 years ago is when I started getting into WordPress, and it's a niche that I ended up staying in.
Hopefully that would answer any questions anyone has, but if not you can feel free to ask (probably outside this thread, just contact me) and I'll answer within reason. I'd just like to end by saying that if there are more qualified/better candidates, I'm happy to let them take this place and run. I'm just offering my help/support to a community with ideals that I believe in.

Something I forgot to mention when I started this thread, I strongly believe that for someone to become an admin on Open Designs, they first need to be a moderator on OD, that way some trust can be built up and you can be evaluated on your performance (and other factors) as a moderator. Being an admin has a lot of responsibility and trust behind the position. Ask yourself this, "would you give the keys to your home to a complete stranger?" Probably not, which is why I think being a moderator for a specific amount of time would help build up trust, help get your feet wet so to speak, etc with OD and the community. Current admins and moderators were picked because of there history with the community, trust and respect for each other, etc. My brain is sort of drifting right now, yay cold medicine, but hopefully I'm getting my point across and will spark some thought, questions, etc from current moderators and members who are interested in becoming a moderator and/ or an admin. ... and now back to letting this cold medicine work into my system. Being sick sucks.

Honesty will come in handy. Maybe a little tolerance as well becasue you are bound to get criticism.
