Over the past few days we've received a lot of new members and designs to OpenDesigns.org so I thought a thread should be started for everyone to introduce themselves... so have at it... tell us who you are and what you do.

Short BIO: How did I get into graphic design? I’m going to attempt to answer that. I have been involved with computers for close to 15 years now. Back in the “hay day” I was involved with an ANSI Art group named, ummm, You know. I have been sitting here thinking, It’s been to long ago, I don’t remember what we called ourselves. It started with a “D” though. Yeah, so I was doing this ansi art, and wasn’t very good. About this time the RIPscrip format came out, I was finally able to draw with lines, and use the predecessor to the graphics you know today. I had always drawn and enjoyed art, but computers were my passion slowly moving along I was introduced to Photoshop, and from there I started learning html. I have stuck with it and now I consider myself pretty well affluent in HTML, CSS, PHP, and standards compliance. As well as being versed intimity with Photoshop. I have been "professionally" doing web design for a little over a year now. :D

in 7th grade (5-6 years ago), my friend had a geocities account and we created some N64 site called N64 Tower. Some time later, i made my own site, Master Sword, which is still around (http://www.mastersword.20megsfree.com) And then i stopped having anything to do with web site stuff for several years. Some time last year, I decided this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so i taught myself HTML. Then this year i taught myself XHTML and CSS. and thats about it.

Hey errrbody, my name's Matt and I've been coding for several years now. My first site was a blog-like site, filled with rants about my school. It was all done with HTML (and all of it was centered). My friend showed me oswd.org, and I downloaded some templates and fooled around with them. I learned stricly through fooling around with pre-made templates. Recently I've started working on some graphic design, but I've had to put my personal pages on hold while I focus on finishing my first semester at college. Anything else you want to know, feel free to contact me.

Hi everyone, I was introduced to the open source design community (in general) by a good friend Tjobbe (NowDesign). I'm a Core Team Member and moderator for the International Web Developers Network and I'm also a moderator at WebhostingTalk. I've been involved with web design since 1996 but have been involved professionally for about six years. My other interests include art, 3d, illustration, video and everything in between. I enjoy learning new things as well as helping others.

Hi I'm LobsterMan. I go by to many names to list them here, but you can call me Joe. I've been messing with HTML for a few years now. After showing one of my first sites (it didn't use tables, it used frames!!!) to my grandfather, he showed it to his cousin, who showed me OSWD. I learnt enough XHTML and CSS (From a book, with lots of experimenting on OSWD templates) to get a job coding XHTML/CSS. A job which I have since left to do freelance stuff. And the rest is history...

Hi all, I'm Karen. Back in 1996, I made a decision to leave my cushy government job that was stifling my creativity. I took a buyout and bought myself a computer. Once I got on the internet, I was determined to learn everything I needed to know about designing web sites. I have been earning a living as a freelance web designer since 1997 and I also work (telecommute) for a local company as their HTML programmer and Site Admin. Last year I found CSS Zen Garden and decided I wanted to learn how to create tableless designs. Then in October of 2005 I joined OSWD/OWD and the rest is history. :) I am proud to be a part of this community and amongst so many talented and smart people.

My name is Bob Baker. My first website was about 10 years ago. It was a geocities site that was all about my interests...then I realized, who in the world gives a rat's hat about my interests? So I stopped. Then, 7 years ago, I got a new job where they were WAY behind in the technology dept. i created a website in MS Publisher, updated our website using MS FrontPage, then again using Dreamweaver. Then I learned more about databases and dynamic content, so I learned to create web content using PHP and MySQL. After learning PHP, I've been hooked on web development. Since then I've learned more and more about web standards and stumbled upon OWD. I see myself as an average designer, but am proud to be amongst the many creative, talented people are. I've learned a lot. Thank you!

My name is Raymond Krause and i've been a web geek to one degree or another since about 1996 when i created my first web page on Notepad and no clues on what the hell i was doing. i've always been creative, sticking mainly to illustration-type work with a strong pull towards graphic design. Since then, i've built up my skills in both coding and Photoshop and will continue to learn because there's ALWAYS something more cool to learn. My first sites were worthless pages filled with worthless "information" so i decided that i really needed to find a subject worth reading about. So because i was researching WWII fleet submarines i built a site dedicated to them. That in turn lead to a more dedicated site to the submarines built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and as i come into contact with submarine veterans, i decided that i would volunteer my time building web sites for sub vets. Long story short, my duel interests in web design and submarines have lead to my site for the USS LAGARTO and a part time gig supporting the Wisconsin Maritime Museum's web site (i'm pushing for a complete re-do of the site in both look and code). i think the kicker for me was that after i had taught myself web design for about 6 years, i applied for a web design job with my company and got it. No degree, no formal training, just a deep interest in web design. It actually paid off. Imagine that.

My name is Wolfram and I'm living in a little beautiful city in Southern Germany/Black Forest near the borders to France and Switzerland. I'm a musician (bass, guitar, vocals, arrangements) and designer. I'm working as a freelancer for several companies in Europe (especially UK and Italy), USA and other parts of the world - just where my skills are needed. My special subject is creating "sophisticated" interfaces and GUIs for music software. See an example of a design for a VST Plug-in created by me here: http://www.wfiedler-online.de/images/layout.jpg Web Design is a hobby of mine and so I'm proud to be a member of OD and that I have the chance to contribute my trials in HTML/CSS. Hope somebody likes it. Cheers

My name is Roshan. Not a web designer by profession, but I love it.. I do it as a part time for fun and of course as an additional income. I have been designing since 2003. Started designing with web standard in mid 2005. Now i realize how bad my old designs were.

Pat Heard and I started into web design 10 years ago when I realized that my Microbiology lab work was way less fun than the Internet (and Team Fortress). Changed to a degree in Computer Science and have been hooked on computers ever since. Been working as a web application developer and GUI guy for the past 5 years in the government. Like arwen said, gov jobs stifle creativity, but it gives me time to work as a freelancer. Graphics started when I was very young with sketching, then moved onto graffiti and finally settled in photoshop when I started web design. Gotta say, CTRL-Z makes art a lot easier.

My name is Brandon Wood, and I've always been a computer geek. I've been programming since I got my first computer, and I've been doing web design for quite a number of years now. I got started doing some really ugly sites with frames and tables using Front Page. As I learned HTML better, I started to code everything by hand. Then I found OSWD (then OWD, and now OD) a few years ago and started to learn CSS. I'm currently making a living as a .NET web programmer in Anchorage, Alaska. I also work for the government, and like Arwen and snop said, I feel like it stifles my creativity. I'm hoping to start transitioning into doing more freelance work, and maybe even be able to do that full time.

Hi Everyone! My name is Jason Newsome. I work full time as an Information Technology Consultant at a University here in California. I started "playing around" with web design about 4 years ago. I started off coding everything by hand in Notepad. I like others found CSS Zen Garden and really liked what could be done with CSS and HTML. I am currently the web designer for several companies, and I do the work for those sites in my off-time. I am going to be setting sometime aside in the coming year to design and submit my first Open Source template. I have learn so much from OSWD, OWD and now am here at OD. I am looking forward to our community growing and becoming stronger. Welcome to everyone. Keep the awesome designs coming. Jason

I am Jason Cole, a 17 year old designer from Canada. I have been in web design for about 5 years. I used tables for about three days, before finding 'the light' in CSS powered everything. I work on a couple of big, hairy, tabled sites, with hopes of bringing them up to date. I was on OSWD for about 7 months before the first split.

Hello all. My real name is Payal, but I get called Jan as well. I'm an author and freelance writer/copy-editor by profession. I got into web design while trying to make my site (writeside.net) in July 2005, and soon after found my way to the then OSWD. The rest, as they say, is history. The little bit of web design stuff I do professionally does bring in some welcome money, but I do love it anyway! (Oh, I have to admit, I ran a table-based site in 2001 - it was about the Ashes cricket series between England and Australia. :shamed: )

it's funny to see people "admit" they used table-based designs as if they were caught raiding the pantry in the middle of the night. It's like admitting that as a kid i wore shirts with butteryfly collars and gaudy-ass designs on them. Like i had a choice. i was a kid and it was the 70's.
