In my never ending quest to learn more about everything here I've come to realize that I'm just about the only guy with a .com address. I think I should be having a .net address but I'm not sure. Whats the 'official' rule on this?
I've realized that with a lot of things there arent rules but more like unwritten standards we all seem to follow. Whats the word on this one? -

Just for the record, many years ago when I first came online, all there were available were .com .net and .org. The rules were this:
.com for any COMmercial enterprise (which became a catchall for everything)
.net for those sites or others providing NETwork services (including ISPs)
.org for ORGanizations, generally non-profit but may be for profit.
Of course, the things like .gov, .vil, state abbreviations, etc. were reserved for gorvernments, municipalities, schools, etc. (www.macomb.k12.mi.us) -

Well, as much as .com was initially meant for commercial sites, it's todays first choice for any site, so if you have a choice, get the .com -

so i should stick with castisdesign.com even if its just a 'playground' for lack of a better word? -

Lobsterman is correct. Keep the dotcom.
I'd say probably 99.9% of people when looking for a site will type in the dotcom extension (I do it too).
And that castisdesign.com is a very good one to have. You may change your mind in the future and use it for providing web design services.
Even if it remains a personal site, the line was blurred so much over the years that dotcom has become a generic catchall for everything, much like aspirin has become a generic word (it was a trademark of Bayer). -

well castis if you already have a dotcom then just chill....
dotnet and dotorg are "usually" (not always) considered as an 'alternative' these days.
even i did, so i have a dotnet, had i been early i would have been a dotcom guy -

I would have taken mattdeasy.com, but it was already taken, so I had to resort to the .net adress. -

Same here, wanted the .com, but chose the .net. At the end though, I am happier with the .net. If you can, you can always purchase castisdesign.net (so no one else does) and then just forward the domain to your .com. -

It's always good to own all the options if the name is important to you. I own the .con, .net and .org for my business site -

Zilladesigns.com was taken, and i went with Zilladesigns.net, but in the end I think .net reads better than .com (really depends on the name of your site). The .com expires in October, so ill probably buy it, but stick with refering to the site as zilladesigns.net, because its what i and those that have gone to it are used to. -

Well it depends. If your target group is from one specific country then the national domain is usually the best.
You know .us for USA, .it for Italy.
For instance, when I buy new hardware I automatically only go for on-line shops with .dk (which is the Danish domain). I never go to .se (Sweden) or .com domains because I know that they probably have their stock in another country. -

Yes, I agree with niemion. My domein is .nl, the national domain for the Netherlands. My target group is Dutch, so that makes the most sense. Though, when I'm going to translate some parts of the website in english (future plans!), I will consider a .com domain. -

In my opinion dotcom is the GOLD STANDARD in the US. If possible you should always buy .com, .net and .org for one particular name. If someone tells me he found a new website called "xwebsite" (and doesn't tell me the Domain Extension), I will always go to the .com first not the .net. You might miss traffic with .net. If you want to become one of the "BIG GUYS" you need dotcom (see smashingmagazine.COM, google.COM etc. ) -

I would second the opinion for .com as the GOLD and the best.
