    Hi all,

I'm looking for a web designer to collaborate with. I need you to produce mocks with graphics in XHTML/CSS (as quirkless as possible), I'll handle all the backend bits and make it operational.

The first project is music related, similar to ilike.com and last.fm. It will be used by approx 5k-15k people on a daily basis, a majority of which are your peers in the software industry.

I have a minimal budget of $500 for this (yes, I'm funding this myself), but will also put a link to your portfolio site in the footer of the site.

I'm wondering if a site design content is the way to go with this?
Any thoughts on a contest or if you're interested let me know.

    Thanks
    -Mark

A contest would be a great idea. You could even pay a fraction of your budget to the winner.

Awesome, I'm glad there is interest in this! I'm new to the design content world, so if anybody can offer guidance on what I need to provide to get this started, please do.

At the 10,000 foot view, I want a new design for last.fm (or ilike.com). I want it to be clean, lite, and as quirkless as possible. I'm not sold on fixed versus fluid layouts.

The core entities are typical: artists/albums/songs/users/groups
And each entity can have: tags and comments

Let me know what I need to provide to get this contest started.
    Thanks!

Ok, but i have only one question.
Where we can show you our project and what needed to be finished? Design and development? Or only design?

Just out of curiousity, what is it that you want your site to do that last.fm doesn't?

I'd contact one of the admins about starting a contest. May I also suggest, if you do the contest with a cash prize, maybe split the prize money? Half goes to winner, half goes to a donation to OD?

last.fm is great for spending hours (aka *time*) surfing around finding new people and music. I'm 39 yrs old, married w/ children, and don't have that (time) luxury. My site solves this problem.

Regarding starting a contest, I would think that you could split up your budget to have design (Mockup + Xhtml/CSS) and programming (PHP/MYSQL/AJAX). That way, you could get great designs and find someone to code it. And I would think since its a contest, the entries would have to be posted here. You could set an end date, and specify what type of payment you can do (Paypal/etc).

graystatic...why would you do it for free when he's offering to pay to have this done? and possibly holding a contest so that everyone has a chance at making or winning some money? don't you want to make money? If you don't then please let others bid on this project the way it's intended or let Mark decide on the contest.

ignore my comment about programming, you could just hold a design contest, have everything specified (as mentioned above) and pick the entry you like best.

Mind if I ask for specifics on how you want this site to work? I did a paper last year for college on social networking sites, so I'm interesting in the details.

I hope your site works -- and if you don't mind a suggestion: have the ability to write reviews for tracks. Blog entries on last.fm are good, but so disorganized cry

Just so you all know, I have been corresponding with Mark through email, helping him get all the details worked out, and how to go about making sure everyone has everything they would need to make the best design they can. So, this all out to be a good time for everyone! I LOVE contest. :)

I hope this is enough info for everyone. The general theme is that I want it to be *like* ilike.com and last.fm, but not obviously a clone. :)

Okay, here is the contest: $400 to the winner, via PayPal, on March 5th, plus another $100 for post-contest tweaks/mods to be paid when my site goes live or 4/1/07, whichever comes first. The winner can donate any/all of it to OpenDesigns if they choose.

    Rules:
    * Mocks must be submitted via email in a tar.gz or zip file to mark.puckett+cdc at gmail.com with the submitter's name, contact email and phone number.
    * Mocks submitted must be the intellectual property of the submitter (it has to be created by you).
    * Mocks must function properly in all recent major browsers.
    * By submitting a mock you agree to allow me (Mark Puckett) to use the design and to modify it as needed
    * Mocks must be new, original, and should not infringe on copyrights
    * Submission deadline is March 4th, 2007 at 11:59:59 PM Pacific

I want quirk-less, table-less, lite (no huge size/weight graphics), web 2.0 (gag, did I really say that?) look/feel, xhtml/css mockups for the following:

A homepage like this (logout if you're an ilike member) with info about the site and login/signup at the top, top songs, new members:
    http://www.ilike.com/

A form entry page like this. I don't care about the "learn more" part on the right side of the page though, just a nice looking form:
    http://www.ilike.com/create

An artist page with albums, tags, fans, groups, comments, top songs chart) and drill downs to view all of each (like see all albums)...like these:
    http://www.ilike.com/artist/Death+From+Above+1979
    http://www.last.fm/music/Death+From+Above+1979

A charts page with calendar and pagination instead of the massive list at the bottom:
    http://www.last.fm/charts/music/track/

I prefer white backgrounds, with #feac31 as a secondary color, and of course shades of grey are good too. Other colors can be used as well, I'm just stating my preference.

Let me know if there is anything else anybody needs to know.
    Thanks!

Some people can't tell what a colour will look like just by looking at it, so I coloured the colour name with itself. It actually contrasts quite nicely with the link colours here.

You should probably mention that the winning design would be your property and cannot be released on Open Designs, unless you don't care if there are clones of your design.

Of course the not winning designs could be submitted I guess. Let's have a list of designs once people submit them too so we can see.

    Mark,
remember, this site was down for a bit with DOS attacks...and until it's fully functional again, there are not a lot of visitors coming in...

maybe you could extend the contest?

Is there a way to do a contest through OD (once it's back up)? If so, how much would be a decent amount to offer? I would think that (best case scenario), I'd like to keep the winning design, and all the other would have to be submitted to OD (of course...again...after OD is back up).
