So I'm starting work on a new website and I'll be setting up some google adsense ads on the site. I was wondering if its possible to make much of an income off of the ads?

yes, its possible - i've seen successful examples - it takes a lot of work, and the site needs a lot of users.
  1.
post fresh quality content at least 3 times a day, get a lot of users involved and moving around your site, then work out the best places to use adsense without it being so obvious. it requires a lot of work but it can be done.

well the site is probably going to get updated at least once a day once the site gets going.

Can the ads be styled to match the site's look?

    To an extent, yes.
  2.
yeah but you can't place images near the ads to disguise them these days, thats quite annoying as it was a nice trick to increase clicks...

AdSense can definitely generate money. But the entire concept is based on the idea that you have to send your site visitors away through the ad links - and I don't really like that. The site visitors usually don't like it either, since nobody visits a site with the intention to click AdSense links...

I prefer fixed-price ads from Text-Link-Ads.com over AdSense at all times, and since it works perfectly for me I can recommend it warmly. Besides, TLA pays several times better than AdSense ever did for my site. I can almost make a living from the the 8 sponsored links on my site. And the best thing: The sponsored links are only showed on my frontpage - so I can keep the rest of my site free from annoying ads.

    ooo thanks, Andreas.

I'm testing it out on my personal site, which uses wordpres, but I'm wondering how i make it so the text links only appear on my home page?

nevermind. My personal site doesn't even meet the minimum traffic requirement cry

I don't think the specifically state what your traffic has to be, but as mdizzle said, when you submit your site they check your traffic rating, and if it's not high enough you get rejected.
  3.
Also if you have a page rank of 0 your likely to be rejected, shallow I know, but a decent pagerank means a quality backlink (e.g. PR5 on Attackr blogroll!) which, for example, if you take Andreas's site being a PR8 would be a very tasty backlink to have ;)

oic, so before you request for adsense, one must already be indexed by google. you cant signup with a freashly launched large site with lots of good content.

new projects are always fun, plus i love looking at members of od.org's sites.

i also got rejected from TLA (my old site) because it didnt have enough pagerank, but i had a considerable amount of traffic for a new site

I have never used ads, of course, I have also never made a living from a site, only designing them. I might put some on the new launch.. We shall see, though I was thinking more Amazon, but you would understand that more when I launch the site.. devil

There are all sorts of Adsense tricks you can use to actually make a living from Adsense. The best one is building a decent site. The easiest one is talking about paid web hosting. In the end, though, unless you hire a real Adsense consultant you can't optimize your site for revenue, optimize it for humans and (depending on the site) the money will come.

    needvert,
What kind of content do you have on your site?

I read that you can make a lot of money with tavel stuff. Just look at the guy who owns seatguru.com; he makes about a $100,000 a year with adsense.

im sure seatguru make WAY more than that. ive been folowing adsense news since the summer. a site like plentyoffish is making the owner around 30k a month or more.

I would still choose TLA over AdSense at all times, since the basic idea with AdSense is that you have to make your site visitors leave your site or you will not make any money at all - while TLA uses the value of keeping your visitors on your own site!

Not to forget, Google still owes me more than $500 after closing my AdSense account - claiming that I had clicked my own links in a situation where I could easily prove that I had not. I had the perfect evidence and Google could not possibly prove themselves right, but they still claimed that they were right and I was wrong. That is the only time I have been really angry at Google...

Now, I'm happy that I left AdSense and discovered TLA instead. As said, I have 8 small and well-styled text link ads on my frontpage, and those 8 links pay much better than AdSense ever did for me. I don't think anyone can earn as much as $100.000 per year from TLA, but I still recommend it strongly.

The fact that TLA makes the payments directly after each advertising month has ended makes them even better. AdSense waited 1,5 month before sending the payments, TLA usually pays after two days... :)
  4.
I had a similar experience to Andreas. I had a site, put Adsense on it (making nearly nothing, I was still developing it), and they claimed I clicked my own links. Then they kept the $10 or $20 that I should have got. They don't want to see evidence, and they won't show you any. It's their "right" to close the account at any time.

@eurogrande, it was a sports training site. i sold it however, hopefully the new owner can capitalize on the great traffic it had.

@andreas, can you give us a general figure of how much you make with TLA? if that is too personal, or a rude question, you dont have to respond.

i personally never click on adsense ads, so i wonder why others would too

needvert: Sure, it is not too personal, it is a number that you can figure out from the TLA site as well. Each of the 8 TLA link slots on my frontpage is currently sold for $225 per month. TLA keeps 50% of the sales amount, and I get the other 50%, which means that I could earn a maximum $900 per month from my TLA ads.

However, several of the link slots were purchased for a long time ahead while the link price was lower (TLA sets all prices by themselves based on site popularity - see their link calculator), so the actual earnings is lower - currently $550 per month. To that, I have a few referrals every month, giving a bonus of $25 each. TLA also offers a service called Feedvertising that makes it possible to place sponsored links in the feeds - but I don't use that service right now.

Personally, I have Adblock:ed out all AdSense ads since two years back, so I never see them anywhere. And I honestly don't miss them either.
