Here's the next few steps we need to figure out:
1 . Register a US nonprofit org, list 3 OWD users as board or whatever
2. Transfer the domain to the ownership of that org
3. Write clear guidelines to avoid confusion about licenses and usage of designs
4. I can donate hosting for the time being, but in the long run, i thing we'll need to find a sponsor, and because template selling sponsors aren't the best options, I guess hosts are the best bet.
5. Code the site functions. I suggest starting with a forum and slowly adding features so we don't loose the community
6. We will need a design and logo. I suggest a contest :)
In the meantime, I think we should get started with the domain, and transfer it later. the sooner we get started, the better it is.
Please Voice your thoughts. -

The Board seems like a great idea, if possible I would like to get in on the board.
Clear guidelines is a plus; Heres and idea when a user goes to upload a template have them check the I Agree button for a creative commons or what ever we choose to do. We also need to set it strait on what the punishments could be for breaking the guidelines 'To prevent another issue like we had over at OWD with other company's selling the designs'.
Hosting:
I have noticed that sites like Media Temple and Text-Drive do a lot of sponsoring of sites. We would have to offer a link to them in return though.
The Contest:
Great idea. What type of logo and design are we looking for. I suggest a cleaner looking one than OWD has so some where between OSWD & OWD. -

what about having a designers website page with links and have a small fee to have your link on the designers pages for sponsors. Or would that be the wrong direction? just an idea -

we can make money to cover hosting using adsense. for license, can we just make all templates PD? -

You have a point Gnome do some thing like that have going over at OSWD on the side bar, this might imply the wrong idea though. -

we can clearly document on the website that the board makes no money, and all money made through adsense goes straight to contest-prizes, and hosting costs. -

I think the designer should still have the option as to what license he or she chooses for their design...the CC license is not hard to understand... -

agreed with Karen, a CC2.5 license should still be available, otherwise i'm out sorry.
personally i'm all for creating designs and providing a lot of help to the community about anything i know, but i'd prefer to get something back from my submitted designs when a lot of effort goes into them, especially as its as simple as leaving 1 little link back to the template designers site...
sorry, just my opinion here, if you have it fully Public Domain your causing more problems, as you can be assured people will not be happy when you find 1000's of sites using a template of yours and they claim it as there own and set up a "web design company" using your templates... i'd like to have some fallback on that situation. -

Yep, having the option of both CC and public domain is a good idea. Noble though it sounds, public domain does create it's own problems ;-) -

I am also for a CC and a public domain option for the license. -

Seems to be that the majority want CC as an option. -

yes cc and pd is easy to understand also (for us newbies. I stand corrected) but i am always interested in the cc commercial license as its nice to be able to use the templates for small studios, quilting groups that also sell quilts, ceramics but can always ask the designer if its ok right? -

if unsure, contact the designer.
that should be the number 1 rule concerning licenses to be honest...
but yeah Icyone the standard CC license allows you to use if for whatever purpose (including on a commercial site) as long as you give credit to the author. as a quick and simple example your using one of my designs on a commercial site, your giving credit to me, all is fine :) (and i'm glad you liked the design and found a use for it!)
its when people claim it as there own and sell it (e.g. dream template fiasco...) that i would use the CC license to fall back onto if (legal) action would need to be taken to get them to remove the licensed templates.
make any sense? i hope so :) -

Oh thanks christopher I was misinterpreting the CC2.5 non-commercial part. Thanks for enlightening me. it does make sense now. -

even if it is PD, you could still sue them for claiming your work is theirs, if you can prove you made it, and they did something stupid like claimed copyright over PD work. -

I think the only major difference between PD and CC is leaving credits. Maybe GNU GPL? -

PD gives anyone the right to use the thinger, and noone can copyright it, as it is PD. This is one thing that tore "BELL AT & T" to pieces: copyright expired, and the market was opened. -

Yes, but some users want to have their credits kept on their design. -

I know, I just Like PD, because because it keeps things simpler for me... Others can use whatever they want.
One thing that we could do now that we have an edit feature would be for each of us to just keep editing one post in each forum, instead of adding new posts. It would be impossible to follow, but fun. -

If worst comes to worst designers could include a 'mini license' that says "Do not remove my link from the footer" or some thing similar to that effect. -
