    Wordpress 2.1 Released

Here’s a sampling of what’s in the new version:

    * Autosave makes sure you never lose a post again.
    * Our new tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly while writing a post.
    * The lossless XML import and export makes it easy for you to move your content between WordPress blogs.
    * Our completely redone visual editor also now includes spell checking.
    * New search engine privacy option allows you take you to indicate your blog shouldn’t ping or be indexed by search engines like Google.
    * You can set any “page” to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system.
    * Much more efficient database code, faster than previous versions. Domas Mituzas from MySQL went over all our queries with a fine-toothed comb.
    * Links in your blogroll now support sub-categories and you can add categories on the fly.
    * Redesigned login screen from the Shuttle project.
    * More AJAX to make custom fields, moderation, deletions, and more all faster. My favorite is the comments page, which new lets you approve or unapprove things instantly.
    * Pages can now be drafts, or private.
    * Our admin has been refreshed to load faster and be more visually consistent.
    * The dashboard now instantly and brings RSS feeds asynchronously in the background.
    * Comment feeds now include all the comments, not just the last 10.
    * Better internationalization and support for right-to-left languages.
    * The upload manager lets you easily manage all your uploads pictures, video, and audio.
    * A new version of the Akismet plugin is bundled.

Thats right time for another upgrade.

Not one mention about the weird decision involving post categories and link categories, and the poor implementation that's driving developers nuts?

I upgraded my personal site today. Everything went really smooth with the exception of my link template page.

As LobsterMan mentioned, they changed the way post and link categories work but after a little testing and tweaking (thanks Joe), it's now working perfectly.

As always, if you're going to do this upgrade, back up everything before hand.

I upgraded. and wow I'm glad I did. its sooo much easier to edit pages now because code and visual editing modes are now tabbed, so you dont have to clip the image and wait for the popup.

I may not upgrade for a while.

I am using My Page Order, My Link Order and My Category Order plugins, and I am concerned that this new approach will totally fry my site.

I just upgraded myself on January 17th to version 2.0.7. I'm really reluctant to upgrade again because of issues with plugins I've grown to love. I'm going to wait a few days to see what other issues with this newest version of WP come up.

Jeremy, do you use anything which has been changed this time round? If not then you shouldn't experience any problems. I'm just annoyed that they put out the upgrade without proper details on template tags changes :/ (as Joe mentioned above) which caused various things to mess up for me.

Just a heads up for the people who don't want to upgrade to WordPress 2.1, the guys behind WordPress will continue to update the 2.0.x branch for a few years, so no real need to upgrade if you don't want too at this point.

There are a couple new features on the back end and improved database queries but again, 2.0.7 is still good and secure and will continue to have updates for a while.

Wordpress developers are smart cookies =P

The new features are nice, but I'm personally not much of a wordpress fan simply because the backend code can be a little drawn out and prone to bugs as a result.

I'm heading into an upgrade now. I don't use the links/blogroll feature on any of my sites, so it will hopefully not be any problem. However, I guess that I need to update my public themes to make sure links are listed in a good way. Any good advice on what code to use?

    Wish me luck!

The one feature I like is the "custom image header" and I implemented it in my MistyLook theme for its Version 3.

Andreas, they came up with new method called wp_list_bookmarks() . this should be used in place of wp_get_links().

    Thanks

Thanks Sadish, I'll read up on it as soon as I can!

The upgrade went fine, no problems at all. I updated my plugin set as well (to Google Sitemap generator 3.0 beta 6, Clean Archives 2.0, Smart Link 3.6 and the latest SearchEverything) and had no problems with it.

    Hi everyone!

Dont know if this is the right section to ask this, i wanted to translate wordpress(just the outside) to another language, the administration can stay in English, i edited the main index.php to my native languague(posted,by,on,leave comments etc) but where do i edit the dates? for exam+ple i installed the this day on plugin but it displays the date in english, cant seem to find the calendr to edit the months names aswell. i could go on a test and trial but im new to wordpress and i dont want to muck with stuff im not used to.

i just want to edit what the user sees nothing else.

Thanks. Where can i download the wordpress 2.1 translation file, i have some freetime in my hands and i could help translating it.

Thanks, you can see my blog HERE

I've also posted this question on open worpress

    @dracoine
i meant just what the user sees, not the administration panel, for xample when i hover the mouse on the number of comments i see "comments on...." i would like to change that to my native language, or i have to translate the whole thing(what the user sees and administration panel)?

    @ainslie
yes for now i want to translate the theme im using (cordobo) so that i can take my blog out of the test area into the open and share it with others that might be looking for it in my language, after that im open to translate other themes, ive done some software translation in the past (open source software), email me with details if possible.

Sorry if im not using the right terminology, as i said im new to wordpress, ive been using blogger for about 1 year now.

    Thanks
  1.
    Hey Ricardo :)

This might not be the cleanest way, but for example the comments link could be done with this code:

    <a href="<?php comments_link(); ?>" title="View Comments For <?php the_title(); ?>"><?php comments_number('No Comments','1 Comment','% Comments'); ?></a>
Then you you could change the title from "view comments for *title*" to your language etc. Does that help at all?

Hi Christopher, thanks for the info, but thats not whatr im looking for HERE'S an example, i found where to change "leave a comment" but where is the code to change "Comment on".

also i see the days in the month in English get the st nd rd after the day itself, where can i remove that and the name of the months, do i need to change my wordpress to my native language or can i do this at the template level only?

    Thanks

Does anyone know a wordpress plugin that will "block" the blog feeds, users will not be able to see/subscribe/find them, i read about a feedburner plugin that redirects the feeds to their feed but some said it messes up recent comments and posts plugins

I decided that since bluetravels was toast, I would upgrade to 2.1

The site is working again, though for how long I am not sure.

As for 2.1, where is the WYSIWYG editor? I have it enabled, but it is not displaying when I compose posts.

    UPDATE:

I think it needs to be pointed out that the WYSIWYG editor does not work in Safari.

So, that is why I was not seeing it.

In fact, 2.1 really does not function well in Safari at all. I suppose it is adequate, but you need FF if you want to get all you can from WP2.1

    Luckily I do. :)

@DeanStev: Indeed, WP 2.0.9 has been out for a while now, they just forgot to put up a post about it in the Dashboard until last night, so they included it with the WP 2.1.1 release post.

OpenDesigns.org is running the latest 2.0.9 since the 2.0.x series will be supported until the year 2010 but down the road we'll be moving over to the 2.1.x series if the need and functions arise.
