hi, when sites and blogs say that the templates are free to use as long as a link is provided back to their site, does that mean i can really do all i want to the template? i take plagerism and copyrite law very seriously and would not want to get on anyones 'badside'. questions,

if i use a template and placed advertising links on my page using another persons design and keeping the designers link in the footer, is that legal?

if someone pays me to modify a template and i explain to them that the designers link needs to stay permantly in the footer, and that someone agrees, are they allowed to pay me for the work of modifuing the template, uploading to the server, etc...?

    thanks.bakie

As long as the attribution isn't touched and the license is noted, you should be good. I would suggest firing off an email to the designer of the template to show them where their work is being used, for courtesy.

    Hey Koloa,

I'll break your message into bits as it's probably easier to explain that way :)

when sites and blogs say that the templates are free to use as long as a link is provided back to their site, does that mean i can really do all i want to the template?

    - Yes, it's yours to do whatever you like with, rip it apart and learn from it, use it on your site, use it on a customers site, whatever you want, as long as you meet whatever license is on it. Most designs require some form of attribution, e.g. a link back crediting the original designer. What this means, is that you could have this as your credit note, Copyright Koloa 2007 | Design by DESIGNER or you could have Design modifyied from a template by DESIGNER etc etc.

if i use a template and placed advertising links on my page using another persons design and keeping the designers link in the footer, is that legal?

    - Yup, it's the "template" you are using and need to credit, not the content on your site. You'd just be using the template for the looks on your site, but the content and everything else is yours and not determined by the template / license/

if someone pays me to modify a template and i explain to them that the designers link needs to stay permantly in the footer, and that someone agrees, are they allowed to pay me for the work of modifuing the template, uploading to the server, etc...?

    - Again, yes, you can charge for service of modifying the template / anything else such as hosting expenses etc. Just explain to your customer that the "template" is free and describe the terms attachted (if any), and that you will modify it etc.

Bottom line is though, if your unsure, send an email to the designer to check.
