In Riden's template Butterfly, he "added a JavaScript required by Internet Explorer 6 and lower so rounded corners would work on hover". My question is are these type of Javascripts allowed in designs? -

@Megadeth: right now we don't have any real "set in stone" rules on design submissions other then they need to be valid code and xhtml 1.0 or 1.1 with css.
If you don't want to use the JavaScript in the design, the designer gave instructions on how to remove it. -

@sean:
sorry, I have to ask: does this mean we can have Flash?

I actually believe we should be able to use simple javascripts like that to fix ie bugs. I was just checking to see if it was alright for the time being.
As for flash... thats another story. -

@refueled: I'm going to say that Flash is not allowed.
We want XHTML sites with CSS.
As megadeth pointed out, if JavaScript is needed for fixing an IE issue for navigation, then that seems to be ok.
What people need to realize is the template designs offered here are not necessarily "finished" sites. They should be used as building blocks for use on sites or to come up with other designs.
Not everyone has PhotoShop or Macromedia Flash. Yes there are Open Source alternatives for these like the GIMP but again, OpenDesigns.org isn't about providing finished sites, just templates to be used... and who ever downloads the designs needs to be able to make adjustments as needed.
This is why text in images isn't allowed. -

@sean:
In the back of my mind I new that was the case, but like I said, I had to ask. Thanks for replying to my question. :) -

Hello,
I am the designer of a theme called "Butterfly" (although that's not the name I gave to it). It was originally posted on my website.
I've checked out the Design Submissions Guidelines thread and read the followingOnly submit designs for which you hold copyrights.
I hold the copyrights for this template, and although distributing an unchanged template with credits visible does not violate Creative Commons, it does violate a rule on my website:Terms of Use
My resources may not be published on other websites, or included on CDs without my permission.
Nobody asked my permission to post it here, and being very protective over my work, I don't like seeing another person marked as the author.
So as a compromise, I allow the template to remain posted on this website, but I ask the administrator to attach it to my own account, or if that's not possible, to delete the template.
If proof of my identity is required, I can provide it to the admin :)
Thanks,
Nela -

Hi black_kittie. I'm one of the admins and founders of this site.
We are going to remove this design right away.
However, we do find it interesting that the user submitted the design with your links still in place (see the footer), so it doesn't appear to be something like trying to take credit for your design since credits are still intact.
I suggest if you want this design on our site, that you upload it via your own user panel.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. -

I know, as I said in my original post, the template is unchanged and the credits are visible, the only thing wrong is that it violates terms posted both on your website and my own.
I will think about contributing to the site.
Unrelated question: I changed my display name to "nelchee", but it still shows black_kittie on the forum, why so? I know, it was stupid to choose a different username. -

The site is configured to show only the login name, not the display name, to avoid confusion. -

black_kittie/nelchee
Even though WordPress supports 'display names' vanilla does not, so as sean said, we disabled display names throughout the whole site it order to prevent confusion. Also, truth to be told, on a site the size of this one, display names will cause confusion anyhow.
If you want your login name changed, email me and i'll change it. -

Now, where is the person who submitted it under their name? -

@Gnome: The person who submitted it did not claim it was their design. They left the proper credits in place, they just didn't get permission to post it. -

I know that they didn't claim to make it themselves, but they did submit it without proper permission. If it has been sorted out, that's cool. I just make most of my work PD so that it spreads all by itself, without me even knowing. -

Yes gnome, if you read the thread, you will see we took action and it's been resolved and in the process we got a new member as well, so all is well in the land of OpenDesigns.org
