I've been working on a visual make over for an application that my company has. Went from a kludgy dropdown menu based system to a main menu at the top, sub menu to the left type page. Pretty simple over all, using a few more graphics and icons and what not. Looked pretty good compared against the old version. And then the trouble began. I was asked to put in some google ads. Not a problem, want to generate some revenue from this thing, but once I started getting the ads to show up, I found that they started to make a visual mess of the layout.

My question to you is, do you design a layout with ads in mind, or do you try to show horn them in later like I'm doing?

You try to keep everything in mind that you know of in the beginning. However is new things must be added you have to make it work, sometimes rewriting things to make it work.
