I am going to give my neighbor one of my old computers. Out of curiousity, if I want to make it factory built again (with regards to what is on the computer), do I just put in the Windows XP CD that came with the computer? I was not sure how to accomplish this. Thanks.

Yep. put in the Windows XP CD which came with it, and restart. It should ask you to press any key to boot from CD. Once the CD has booted, you can follow the on-screen prompts. You may want to stop part-way through, so that your neighbour can put in their own name.

Make sure you reformat the drive during re-installation otherwise the original windows folder will be reinstalled but some data will remain on the drive.

The easiest way I have done this during installation is to delete the drive partition and set the "new" drive as 100% capacity.

Make sure you have all the drivers available before you begin re-installation - this would either on disks supplied with the computer or from the manufacturers website.

Thank you Jason and James. Well, I found the Windows XP CD, but not any of the drivers. I was kind of hoping everything would be easy using just the XP CD.

Depending on what version of XP the CD you have is it might not pick up the hardware - I just reinstalled and re-patched and only today have I got sound back on my Compaq.

On a different note all my other p/w were saved with FF - but not OD's? I've tried to get access to my old account back but no email ever comes from the 'forgot your password' form - I'd be grateful if an admin could contact me on the email used to register this account (same as regular account) so I don't have to post as 'Unknown' or tell me what I need to do?

To back up the drivers, try one of these.

    Driver Magician Lite

    Driver Collector

Cool links Len. Have you and anyone used these before? What did you think?
