I was just wondering if any of you are concerned about your Alexa ranking. Do you do any tricks to improve it, or do you just let it be? I was wondering what things I can do to improve mine. I have read articles, but I was wondering what worked for you. Do you use widgets? -

The Alexa ranking doesn't do much for a sites ranking unless the people viewing your site have the Alexa tool bar installed, at least that's been my understanding for some time now. -

Unless you're in the top 100,000, the Alexa ranking is fairly meaningless. If you want to manipulate your rank into the top couple hundred thousand, simply install the toolbar and visit your site often (15-20 times a day, at least). I was able to bring a site I owned from about 2,000,000 to 240,000-ish in a couple of months that way.
Maybe they've applied filters to stop this now.... I dunno. -

They only count unique hits from users who have the toolbar installed. -

@Aeriff - That may well be the case now. I tested this out in 2005 and it worked like a charm for me and for others as well.
Since Alexa rankings mean little to me these days, I've not bothered checking to see if still works. -

I don't see how that can be the case as I have a dev site that only I and another IT guy visit (who doesn't have alexa) and its currently ranked at 800,000. I've been on many sites in the past that are well below that and those sites are live for the general public, if its only counting unique visits its impossible that I, on my own, could get a site ranked 800,000.
I do spend about 7 hours a day on this particular site as well I might add. -

When I first set up my site at the beginning of April the first rank I had was about 24 million. Since then it has steadly improved and is now in the top million.
I appreciate this doesn't mean the site is particularly busy but it's definately getting more hits each day, I don't do anything in particular to improve the ranking.
I don't use the Alexa toolbar so it doesn't officially count my visits but Alexa must use other data to work out their rankings. -

as is my understanding, the only real way to increase your alexa ranking is to get more traffic. somehow targeting users who have the alexa toolbar installed will obviously get you a better rank, but at the end of the day you just need more hits; it's not like optimising for search engines (but seo usually gets you more traffic, which would in turn increase your alexa rank

Thinking-Out-Loud: If Alexa knows what portion of users in your topic (such as web design) have the Alexa bar installed, they can get a good idea of how much total traffic you have. The measurement is pretty rough, and it would be easy to tinker with. They could use this as part of a weighted-average or total of a hundred other stats. -
