I'm getting fed up with the a many of shopping carts that look super nice then just end up redirecting you to paypal.com. How does one process credi cards on their site. I'm so confused. thanks

@conar: all credit cards get processed (payment gateway) through third party vendors. You can make your payment gateway/processing pages have the same look and feel of your site, even with PayPal, it just takes a little know how. What shopping cart application do you like or want to use, but have it appear it's processing through your site directly?
  2.
The most common Payment Gateway is Authorize.net around here.

If you are using your own PHP solution I've had this article in my bookmarks for a while.

conartist: You need to sign up for a payment gateway as Sean said. Paypal offers this as "Website Payments Pro" which will let you process cards on your site *OR* let the user pay with their PayPal account, but there are plenty of others as well. A payment gateway is probably going to cost per transaction as well as a monthly fee (Website Payments Pro is $30/mo + $0.30/transaction + 2.2-2.9%/transaction depending on volume, and that's actually quite cheap). Most popular shopping carts have a plugin or module or whatever they call it for Website Payments Pro.

*note: You will want to make sure you have a quality SSL certificate before you start accepting Credit Cards

Sorry that the post was relatively PayPal-centric...I tend to do a lot of work with PayPal, which means it's what I'm most familiar with.

i think website payments pro is the most sensible thing i was looking at that the other day and I saw a list of shopping carts on paypals site that were compatible with it. but I can't find them now

And since I've been following it since Alpha stages, I can say that Magento is a really nice solution. They release 1.1 in about a week.
/* Gnome turned on HTML */

Does Magento 1.1 support downloadable products? I was looking at it a while back for selling usic downloads, but it didn't support the feature at the time.

does magento support integration with paypal web payments pro so that the customer with stay on the site for the whole transaction. also someone else i talked to mentioned API integration
  6.
acousticsam: Version 1.1 will support virtual products (ones that are E-Mailed rather than shipped), but they said downloadable products (the automation to have Magento do it all for you) would be in a maintenance release following 1.1.

conartist: Yes, it has full support for Website Payments Pro. As for API integration, you'll have to specify what API. If you are talking about the Website Payments Pro API (through PayPal), you needn't worry because the Magento team did all the integration for you. If you're talking about an API so you can easily extend Magento, that's there as well. Having said that, most other shopping carts (cube cart, zen cart, etc) are in the same boat, having already handled Website Payment Pro integration, and having an API of their own.

I'm using magento on two projects right now... despite many people trying to push me away. I'm just starting to get the hang of it.

One project is using PayPal Website Payments Standard.

I wish you had some time available right now Aaron... I have to sub out the major part of one of the projects. I'm waiting on a price from Varien. cry
  8.
is it possible to integrate Website Payments Standard into a site easily?

Thanks to the amount of support and contributions that OSCommerce has you can support practically every single payment around, I say practically only because its impossible to know for sure, but i've never found something that wasn't supported and many large stores use OSC with customers all over the world without any payment problems.

So.... yeah, you can't have looked around too much if you haven't stumbled OSC :D

Yes but you stated before you did not want the checkout to leave the site?
  9.
yes but i'm sure there is a way to integrate it right maybe with lots of programming? idk what ever.... but anyway

I'm installing magento and it says i have to install the sample data first. I imported the database but to what dir do i upload the folders?

In Magento, it's as simple as putting in your business name, e-mail address, and PayPal Button.

my client is currently using QuickBook Merchant Services for her in-store by-phone and mail-in orders this also has a website integration ability so I rally thinks she wants that. But Paypal website Payments pro offers the saime abilities.... but How do these work with paypal? Do you download software? stressful times I do say!

I installed magent to and configured everything but my index page is just blank. Why is this? I was able to access the admin panel but not the stores front end.
