I have been sitting at this computer for 4 hrs browsing cssdrive.com and cssremix.com for some inspiration. I want to redesign my site but i am BRAIN DEAD!!! I am interested in creating a (I'm not sure what its called) site. All I know is that basically any site that ends in .co.uk has the feel I want. I just don't have enough inspiration I guess. Thanks

Ah, I see ... bigsmile. Maybe Stu Nichols has an inspiration for you? He is UK based and his website full of css inspirations (although his site is not too clearly arranged if you ask me). In any case he is a css master.

I feel like I've been in the same boat lately and man is it aggravating! Been looking around FAVEUP and there's a few good ideas in there that might help you out. I really don't know where else to look though- seems like everything starts to look the same after a while confused

British Design (or at least a Canadian interpretation thereof):

large text, either Georgia or Trebuchet MS.

white text, w/ dark rich background, or off-white background with dark grey text.

    well-spaced everything

subtle images (such as Jay's old animated-gif design), but keep dark colours saturated.

Use strong contrast, and AAA accessibility. Meeting that accessibility requirement can affect your design, somewhat.

Make good use of patterns and gradients for backgrounds.

Have clearly-defined sections of your site (changes in background or large margins).

what is "Jay's old animated-gif design"?

Thanks for the reminder! I downloaded it back then but never used it. For some reason I think of it at least every month! Jay has submitted/ presents very innovative approaches like Google maps integration, accordion, sFIR etc.

@Connor: Nice concept, unfortunately it breaks BADLY in i.e.6 (sorry, its the standard here @werk and we can't load anything better ourselves) and that still does have quite a significant marketshare out there ... :( Otherwise its an attractive and clean design. I did not see any flash but again that may be due to my dinasaur browser.

    great design, connor!
loving the subtle wood pattern on the nav... and the way that the active tab pops out over top of it, it's lovely.

it's always a good thing when you can draw attention to your nav!

that beige band at the very top is a tad annoying, though... personally, i'd cut it out of the background image.

other than that, it looks stellar!

ps: there's a typo in the footer... you spelled your name wrong bigsmile

    I believe i fixed the IE6 problem

OOOOOOH I REALLY Like!!! one tiny nitpick .. the rounded corners in the bottom are not quite transparent (which I assume was what you were aiming for, the rounded corner look ;) but the Navigation is AWESOME and the only thing I would POSSIBLY change (and this was based solely on a whim) is make the little bar underneath the "live" tab do a slow pulse when its in "current" mode .. I just think that would look rather cool, but may not quite work with the cleasn and green theme of the site. Otherwise looks all fixed in i.e. 6 and is BEAUTIFUL <>

i don't see a problem with the rounded corners on the bottom...

@connor: run your content through a spell checker, you have no idea how unprofessional a typo or misspelled word looks :p
  8.
the corners are png32s so they are def transparent. i ran the spell check.

Exactly. PNG doesn't have transparency in IE6. It has to be hacked in order to work. GIF supports 1-bit transparency, across the board, with no problems.

Reminds me of project vino. My only comment would be that I don't like the navigation shifting upwards on hover.
  10.
    that was my inspiration

    Very, very nice look.

And I really have to say how much I love the font on the navigation menu on the project vino site, looks fantastic with the navigation toolbar background.

Otherwise great work, looks really good.

@connor/gnome: I have noticed more and more designer sites using PNGs instead of gifs .. can you tell me what are the advantages of one versus the other?
  11.
I like using png32s because then I don't have to remember for the gif if its alpha or index transparency, lol. Pngs suport semi transparency (like ou can see through a shadow) If I'm correct I think PNG32s Have 24 bits for color and 8 bits for transparency so you can have a nicer image with the png.

The hover links don't work at all in IE6, which pretty much ruins the design.

And to be honest even though you don't have any oblication to, i'd rather like to see you link back to the Vino site in your footer as your inspiration, as it does look very similar, especially the wooden background to the nav, it looks like its been taken off and had the colours above and below changed a bit, which I wouldn't be to happy with if it where my image, at least not without some kind of recognition.

I'm not trying to start any controversy and accuse you of plagiarism, I just think in the spirit of things it would be nice to see people link to their inspiration, when it is as similar as these two appear to be.

I think It does really look like vino but The only thinkg is the nav and the placement of the header. I think there are more differences than similarities, I just love what Ive done so much. What can I do to make it more mine.
