Out of interest, how much editing has gone on in photoshop or whatever program you use? Or is this all down to taking the time to get the settings right on camera when taking?

Love the photos, these pics could of easily gone through without any editing (photoshop..) - with the right camera.

    Either way, great photos.

    Very pretty photos...

A few of mine: http://www.xaosqueen.com/MMM/IMG_0038.JPG these were all done using only the colorpicker on a canon digital elph SD1000 ... Sorry these are links but the files are 1MB or bigger and I didn't want anyone with a dial-up bogged down if they did not want to be....

@Colin those are great, I especially like the last one (the bird). What camera are you using? it's an HDR I assume (to lazy to check for exif information) ? You wouldn't happen to have a large version of the bird would you, available for download?

@CS: I assume you mean SLR cool and yeah, I use a Nikon D300. In case you're wondering though, none of them are processed with HDR. Just some vignetting and contrast with Aperture 2. I just added some metadata and links to the photos. Feel free to download bigsmile

edit: Hang tight for those links shamed

Yes, I meant SLR. I was multitasking and thinking about something else when I wrote that. Thanks for the added information and the links when you have those working.

Any reason why you went with the Nikon, over say a Canon? I know for most people it's preference.. I'm still trying to decide between them. Any experience with both?

@CS ... in terms of digital or film cameras? I prefer Canon for Digital, my Nikon Coolpix would always make my purples blue and didn't like certain colors and shades, the Canon is better about it ... for SLRs I miss my old agfa! My Pentax got some gorgeous photos as well ... have to scan those in one of these days ..

    @Everyone? haha

Personally, I use Nikons for two reasons. Firstly, their SLRs are far and away the most intuitive on the market. I love my D300 because it gets out of the way and lets me do my thing. Every Canon I've ever used needed direct attention throughout my entire shoot. Secondly, Nikon glass is the undisputed best on the market. Many people that shoot Nikon do it just for the lenses. They're absolutely incredible.

It is, however, essentially personal preference. I've shot Nikon all my life, but bought a couple of Coolpix point and shoots and they both broke within a couple of months. I now use Canon Powershots for all of my snapshots. They're great. For anything serious though, out comes the Nikon.

@XSQueen: Thank you kindly. peace Nikon is notorious for producing generally warmer tones. This can be fixed in custom menus or Photoshop if you've got some patience. I admit, it shouldn't have to be this way, but some people actually buy Nikons because of this. Weird, I know.
  1.
@colin is what lenses do you use. how is the stock lense on the D300?

    @conartist:

    • Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6

    • Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

    • Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6

    • Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR

    • Nikkor 50mm f/1.4

    • Nikkor 85mm f/1.4

    • Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR

+ I just ordered a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8. I shot with a rental model last weekend and it's the best lens I've ever used. I'm really excited, and it's probably going to replace (read: be paid for by selling) all of my primes.

The D300 can be had with a few different lenses. Photographer Ken Rockwell's favorite lens is the Nikkor 18-200, but personally I think it's too much of a miracle. The distortion is insane. If you're going to drop $2,000 on a camera though, you can probably afford something better than a kit lens, so I'd just buy the camera body and something like a used 28-70 f/2.8. That's an excellent lens and can be had for much less than the new 24-70. It's just a little bit heavier.

Here are a couple of mine. I take a few pictures here and there and once in a while get a good one.

Well, this is very far from what I would even call decent, but:

Wow ... these photos are so gorgeous. Unfortunately I have never paid to much attention to photography, just the normal family and holiday shots with my simple fuji finepix which I bought because it makes great indoor photos (product photos). But seeing all these photos I realise that photography indeed is art.
I like the rainbow photo and colin's raven is so hitchcock like ... just great. I also like xsqueens black & white photos with the flower color spots. Black & white can be very atmospheric. I also like papabs waterdrops and all the others .. I wish I had more time to learn all this.

P.S. wundertype, what is your photo about? Is this on the stage? I like it. It looks atmospheric too ... just couldn't figure out what exactly it is about?

I've just used a Fuji Finepix 3,2 mega pixel camera. A little photoshop here and there to clean up the photo and sharpen it some. Otherwise its just composition.

    Nice, nice. –
@bluecafe: Mine is'nt really a stage but made during an art event in an empty industry hall. The man in the back is criss-crossing the hall with an oversized aorta (human body part) on a crane. Crazy, isn't it? I shot it with a small Sony. I also use a Canon Eos 400D (I think it is the same as the Rebel XT in the US).

    Great pics everyone.

Slightly off topic, do any of you photography buffs know why my hubby is getting the half round shadow on these 2 pics? Camera is a Nikon D70s lens is a wide angle 10-20mmD Sigma, 1.4-5.6, flash is on top of camera. We thought it might be the lens hood but the problem still occurs without it.

    Thanks for any insight...

It sort of looks like a finger in front of the lens while holding the camera.

When he takes pictures, does he ever use a tri-pod?

If so, does this still happen? and does it also happen with outdoor pictures?

No. Supporting Sean, I also think it could be his fingertip or knuckle on the focus ring in front of the flash.

@zanzibar: That's your own shadow. I've got a Nikon D300 and use the Sigma 10-20 religiously and I have the same problem. That the downside of using a flash with an ultrawide! fierce

    Colin is right.
It's from the wide angle lens.

I have a customer that gets the exact same problem.
    Better lighting should help.

@all - Thank you all for your input.

Difficult to set up lighting in such small spaces. As you might have guessed hubby is a kitchen and bathroom remodeler.

I guess the solution would be to separate the flash from the camera.
