Got volunteered into helping with a fundraiser for a sick co-worker. People are donating goods and services to help raise money. Ideally we'd like to do something like an auction (people must register with valid info, etc)where people can pledge /outpledge each other for a given item. Any suggestion for a CMS or script to use for this, or idea of what app/online service lets you do something like this? Ideally we'd have photos and descriptions of each item up for "bid" and maybe a "I want it now" button with a donation amount ... Any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks in advance!

Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is an eBay store. Seems like that would cover all your needs...

but I'm not sure what there is out there as far as free/open-source stuff or CMS.

if it's a silent auction, just get them to email you their bids as no one sees them anyway??

well you want people to outbid each other so maybe the "silent" auction is the wrong term ... and I REFUSE to give eBay any money ever again.. hence eBay store is not an option. I did find some WP auction plugins tho they are not free :/

so is it or isn't a silent auction? is it just a normal auction? if so there's lots of auction scripts out there or i'm sure wordpress has something like for that - given you can make users register?

There is PHP auction available free.

Short description: The GPL version of PHPauction featuring email notification of bids, attachments, reserve price, minimum bids, standard and dutch auctions, bid history, send auction to a friend, highest bids, auctions ending soon.

    Homepage: http://www.phpauction.org/

I am not afilliated (or familiar) with the program.

@copsworld: Thank you I will check it out ...

@perth: Its starting to look like a moot point (?!?) since the people who were organizing it have basically dropped the ball, and I don't have the time to carry the project on my own. Thank you all for your ideas! If they do decide to go on with it again I will keep you posted!
