I reckon once a year we should have a $5 Donation Day whereby we promote the idea to donate to $5 OD.
I know we can do this any day, and many people do, but this would just promote the idea and make it a bit more 'out there'.

I think it's a great idea, but the community already has money that we don't do anything with.
Once we start to do stuff like run competitions with prizes and pay for hosting lets go for it. -

good point - when we get a system in place to run competitions it will make it more relevant, but we could still have a donation day in the near future to build up some funds for some comps.
there's a design comp for us "donation day" -

I think the donation day once a year is a neat idea, however some people might consider this like a membership fee and not like that.
Having it be any day you want would be good too, but making it mandatory would probably also upset a few people.
Also, we have an OD PayPal donation thread which isn't a mandatory thing for people to use and the last donation made to OD was back on January 15, so a good 6 months ago. -

I like the "donation drive" idea. No need to make it mandatory but make it a push one week out of the year.
I volunteer to do the phones. -

there was never any mention of it being mandatory, by definition a donation is optional isn't it?
I just thought it would bring the 'idea' of donations to a focal point, I think the donation thread gets forgotten about.
I volunteer not to kick any cats that week too out of respect for all the cat lovers that may want to donate here... just doing my bit for the community. -

@pete: I think it's a good idea and indeed, the donation thread does get forgotten about, even though it is a sticky.
No you didn't mention it being 'mandatory' but you did call it 'donation day' which implies a specific day, and to some that might appear to be mandatory.
I'm glad to read you won't kick any cats during the donation week

I think it's a good idea once we have all the other bits settled. We definitely should have an annual donation drive. Maybe we can make it a week and you can kick the odd cat too if that's what your in to :-) -

For what it is worth, I dont EVER look at the forum page. I am not quite sure why as I look at them in other online communities.
If it is not on the front page, it is out of mind.
That is just me, though.
Once cool stuff like contests and such get rolling, I don't think it would be bad to have a badge on the front page: "Donate to support the contests" or something like that. -

I agree - and I also never look at the forum page.
A badge on the front page would be cool for the 'donation week' - lets make animated using just red and green colours

I think it would be a great idea also.
Maybe something along the lines of a Donation Awareness Week.
Put a fancy badge in the header or something for a week. -

I guess I was right then as I'm not the only one who only looks at forum posts on the front page. -

Only looking at the front page to see what's going on with the OD forum is sort of a bad idea since you only get a snap shot, the latest 10 active posts.
Here's an example, lets say post #11, #12 or even #20 which would be off the home page might have something really important needing attention or someone needing some help, etc but it was pushed off the top 10 on the home page with other threads getting more comments or a lot of new threads being posted. That's not good.
Of course some would say show more posts on the home page. Ok, so were do we draw the line? 15 posts? 20? 100? That could possibly make the home page really cluttered and you still might miss posts that were just behind the set limit for the home page display.
Bottom line, it takes only a few seconds to click forum in the navigation to look. Taking a few seconds out of your busy day/night to look directly at the forum could help save the day for a designer, template user, etc.
Side note, I started a new thread to discuss forum posts on the home page so we can keep this current thread on topic for donation ideas, etc. -
