What rules do you apply when picking a domain name. Some research I have found says:
1. Try for a .com first
2. Keep it under 14 characters if possible
3. Avoid hyphens
Are these legit? If anyone has thoughts on domain names selections, let me know. I have to purchase one right now, and the one I like best has a hyphen:
exercise-us.com
It is going to be a day in the US where kids exercise coast to coast for 10 hours. Before I purchase it, I was not sure if the hyphen was a bad idea. -

Your rules are good ones, however even 14 characters is pretty long.
Do try and avoid hyphens if you can but if that's the only way you can get close to what you want, do it, just don't have more then one hyphen. I've seen people have 3 or 4 in a domain... so bad.
I would also suggest getting the .net along with the .com and do a 301 permanent redirect on the .net to the .com
Have you tried getting a .us for your name? since it will be in the US? -

Thanks for the input. The one I wanted was taken. I just thought I should stay away from the .us domains and try to stick with .com I have been trying to research what is correct. -

@NickyD: You can make any extension be the correct one. Having a .us is perfect for USA based sites, which is why you can get a .us in the first place, plus it will help make your domain one character shorter

Well, if anyone has any suggestions for a good .us domain, please let me know. The site is in beta right now, but it can be viewed here.
I have been working very hard on it, with support from Wolfram and Bob. -

If you can tell someone to go to yoursite.com, then it is a good domain name. If it has a hyphen, well that's not as easy. -

That's actually pretty good Fernando. I worry about the last 3 letters, which may stand out. In the states, it implies something else
exer 'tit'.....not sure on this one. -

Have you thought about alternative words for "exercise"? I hit up a thesaurus and starting thinking along the lines of kidsusworkout.com and the like (which is available, and only 13 characters). Just tossing the idea out there

Wow, you all gave some great suggestions. I would love the exercise.us domain, but I don't want to spend more for it right now as the site is a non profit site presently.
So, now to choose from your great suggestions:
kidsusworkout.com
waveofexercise.com
fitnesskids.us
letsgetstrong.com
exerciseiscool.com
Just saw that uskidsworkout.com is available. I like that one too! -

I like the fitnesskids.us as well.
For some reason, I am not sure how I feel about a .us domain....as I like the .com domains.
I did contact the exercise.us owner, but my budget won't allow me to use it.
uskidsexercise.com is also available. -

Be careful with posting all your ideas here and not grabbing them up. They could be available at the moment you looked at them, but the OD forum is well indexed in search engines, so someone could see this thread and snap up the names before you and then try and sell them to you for a profit. You have a lot of choices now, so I think it's time to draw a line in the sand and pick one or you will never pick one with more and more choices. Just my opinion of course. -

uskidsexercise.com is also available.
No never Len, I wouldn't chose it - the sex is too obvious. It has a really weird unconsciously psycholocical effect to the reader. It's sounds like you are exercising kids in sex. Sorry to say that. Hope you don't mind...
