I have a design I am working on.
It now validates, thanks to the removed span tags, although the validator does not like the domain name, so the code has to be manually inserted.
Do people like the appearance of the design ?
I added classes .top and .bottom to go outside of things in the sidebars, instead of using the <span> tags, which broke validation.

Different, I will give you that. I would work on the padding some.

Here is my screen shot in Safari (Tiger OS)

Has a great look, but appears to be off a tad.

    "What do poeple think?"
    Well, people usually don't think

As for the design, I can't say because your (free?) server seems to be down.

I changed the width of the sidebars to be percentage-based.
Lobsterman: yep: it's free. The site appears to be down whenever I upload, because I have to delete the old files before uploading new ones. Do you know why safari does that? the header, and the sidebars are all floating. I have attempted to fix it, although I am stabbing in the dark here...

I am looking into that. I have not looked at your code yet, but offhand I am wondering if you are using "clear" elements for your layout. My very limited understanding of the use of float commands is that when you use them you need to usually use something like clear:both

    http://www.w3schools.com/css/pr_class_clear.asp

If this is not of any help let me know.

At least i didn't just use my own DTD.. then I could make <leftbar> and <rightbar> tags, and drop id/class attributes altogether. devil . This design continues to have issues, as liquid layouts with stacks of background-images are prone to be, but I will keep working at it.
  1.
Definitely an eye-catching design. Looks great on medium-to-large size screens, but when viewed in 800x600, the "features" box and the boxes to the right appear too scrunched up. I'd make those boxes fixed-width. The "features" box would look better if it were the same width as your top-left box. I'd put the right-side boxes at 200px wide or something like that.

The fluid header and footer work great.

I like the colours, and the use of shadows/gradients is appealing, without overdoing it. the only other suggestion I have for you is to change the background colour of your div#content to maybe an off-white, pale yellow or something, just to add a little more focus to the content.

All in all, a great design! Will it be available on OD soon?

At some point, it will be available for download, but if you are impatient, you can just rip it from where it stands.

Update: Much work has been done on my newest design, and it is nearly ready, with only a few questions to be answered before the release. http://xmg.atspace.com/test/ to view the site.

    1. Any other glitches in Safari or IE 7 ?

    2. acousticsam: I have added some style to the content, as well as increased the font there, in order to add focus, and I gave the sidebars an EM-based width, which is a bit more stable on smaller screens. What do you think now?

    3. Is there any major feature that would make this design just right? (what am I missing?)

I like it how it stands. smile

    Looks great, gnome!

Designs works perfectly in 800*600, and degrades gracefully with CSS disabled. I have nothing further to add!

    What acoustisam said smile

The layout and text increase/decrease beautifully.

The only thing I would add is the "missing" border on the left/right hand side of the sidebars - I keep thinking that they've gone off the page when of course they haven't.

It also looks great (better?) with images switched off, might be an idea to have a second design without the aqua green tubey borders?

Daisy: the 'missing' borders happen to involve another 2 background images /tag, so that won't be possible without pseudo classes and IE hacking. I'll try to see what I can do by modifying the images...

Sorry gnome, I used the word border in the non css sense (more of a picture frame sense). I too would run a mile from using IE hacks!

I know what you meant, but it would involve extra stuff that CSS can't do very easily right now.

    Jason:
I like the uniqueness of the design. The header and nav is sharp.
