You have to install the proper display driver.
Display drivers are proprietary software, and so are not included on Linux distributions.
Linux comes with a bunch of generic drivers, covering the most used graphics cards, and that's all.
You need to find the driver for Linux and install it - under Linux.

yep. nvidia drivers are easy to install: download drivers, kill the X-server, start driver install, restart x. There may also be a way to install via your package manager as well.

Did you post over at ubuntuforums.org? They are most helpful. The absolute beginner talk get the most exposure.

There should also be a tab under system>Administration> "Restricted Drivers Manager". Does your display and wifi show up there?
