Snop -- outstanding! I really love it. But, yeah, all of them are so amazing. How. . .to. . .choose. . . -

Pat; I like the way that you took ideas from Jay's and other peoples designs and created a wholesome looking design. -

I'm in the middle of coding my design and I've got an opinion question for you guys. Do you think the logo, top tagline and account admin links should always be visible down to 800px wide? To me, it makes sense, but there are pros/cons:
pros
-They're always visible down to 800x600. Hard to say how important this is because it depends on how many people are still using 800x600. Still, when you enter a site, the first thing you should see is the title/logo.
cons
-markup becomes a lot more complicated and less logical (seriously...I think I've spent about 3 hours coming up with different options and the clearest I can get is still mud)
-when you horizontally scroll, there's no way to get the logo etc. to move with the scroll, so they'll be sitting in the middle of the header, instead of lining up flush with the rightmost column's edge.
Thoughts? -

Depends on the stats of this site, but I seriously doubt that many people are viewing it in 800x600.
Things not lining up in the design would peeve me too. -

if you line up the logo, tagline and "Welcome Back" stuff on the left, inline with the Welcome! text in the main content, it should look pretty good.
Like this Snop's Mock-up
BTW.....LOVE the logo

I think the design should look good in 1024x768 and above. There are a few people still using 800x600 but it's like 1% of the total viewers. -

I always strive to design for 1024x768; the default resolution of the 12" PowerBook :) My site stats show it's between 10-18% of visitors' resolution. -

Hmmmmm, not a bad idea Bob, but I like the balance of the right alignment too much to give it up. Maybe I'll make an alternate class for anyone who wants that behaviour and let the user decide. And glad you approve of the logo
Thanks for the input people - 1024x768 cut-off it is. -

snop, can you add a class or variable to allow for 800x600 encase it is in fact needed? -

That's not a problem - content width is controlled by a single, generic class. -

A quick correction:
As of July 2006, at least 17% of people still use the 800*600 resolution. A quick list of internet stats can be found here.
I do not think that this will be much of a problem, as most OD users probably use higher resolutions, but we should always keep the 800*600 option ready for accessibility reasons.

The way we want the design is that the important stuff is visible within the 800px limit -

Can I do a fluid-width version? I will do one pretty close to the spec for Jay's original, but I think that the Net is ready for fluid width. -

The downside that I always find in doing a fluid width is the inconsistency in appearance. A design in 800*600 looks drastically different from the same one in 1600* 1200. Probably becauses it is one-fourth the size. -

Due to the variable content on this site, we want to keep it fixed width, which is easier to control. -
