Is there any free programs out there that I can use to change the video format around. For example, I have a file that has the extension .asx, but I would like to convert it to .mpg

I also have a video of .flv file. Can that be converted to .mpg?

    Thanks.

    Hi Len,

    There's a few...
search this forum by a post by Christopher for a program called "Super"... the actual download link is impossible to find on their website but Chris provided a direct link... somewhere?

I'll try to find it too.

    another option is called "MediaCoder"

I recently downloaded MediaCoder... and first time I ran it my firewall warned me that it was logging keystrokes. Plus, I've never actually been able to successfully convert a video file with that program. It's not very user-friendly.

I use Any Video Converter (Free Edition). I don't know if it does .asx, but it supports .flv. Maybe the pro version supports .asx.

You can find Super here. Go to the very bottom of the page to find the download link.

Personally, I prefer MediaCoder. I didn't have the same problem as acousticsam either.

Well, thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them worked. So, if anyone knows a free program that can covert .asx to mpg, let me know. They did work with the .flv files, but not the asx.

Thank you Pete. Appreciate your assistance. I will give them a try in the morning. Got to tuck in the little ones now, and will probably pass out from exhaustion after that.....

Funny, I can play this video no problems on my computer, but it does not seem to be recognized by most of the programs I have tried that support this extension.

    .asx = microsoft = grief

hence why the world should go to open source standardized formats. Maybe consider what format you use in the future to make the conversions easier.

I use xvid for all my family videos - it may not be the future format in 10 years but i'll be able to convert them to the 'new' format in 10 years

Honestly, now I am going to bed.

I did not create the .asx file. I downloaded it from a web site yesterday, and it was the format used from that web site.

    Len - read about ASX-files here: http://www.topvideopro.com/mp3wav/asx-mp3.htm

    Perhaps it helps...

Lewis, email sent with the file attached. Hopefully, you will have better luck converting it.

Pete and Wolfram, I am going to check out your links now.

    Thank you everyone.

    Edit:
Wolfram, your article was helpful in explaining this type of file. Even though it converts asx to only mp3 and not mpg, I still downloaded it to see if you would allow me to convert the audio, and it did. Now, I have to find a program that can do both audio and video together.

After reading Wolfram's article, I uploaded the file to my server see look at the code, since Wolfram's article suggested it goes to a server to view. After researching, the asx file actually links to:

    http://wm.wcsh-wlbz.gannett.edgestreams.net/news07/050708_exercise_wlbz.wmv

Maybe this makes it easier. Is there a way to download this video file this way?

Like Len said above, it "links" to other files.

An ASX file is simply an XML document that stores a list of Windows Media files to play. Which means the ASX isn't actually the media, but more so a playlist... so you shouldn't be trying to convert it unless the program you're using can parse the ASX and convert the media given in the ref href's.

Yep, Christopher is right. It's also written in the article/link I suggested for reading about ASX. So Len, with the link it's ok. I would use it this way as far as it works...

Is there a way for me to download it now as a .wmv? I would like to use this video in a presentation I am giving.

Coollew, thank you for the effort.

Len - try right click on link and save as... I did it and saved it, but the wmv was only 1 kb. I think everything is stored in the asx file. Don't know, if it works, but give it a try.

Hi Wolfram. Yes, I did try that, but it would not let me open it.

I am just hoping someone more advanced than me on this topic can create it in an mpg format.

Len: Why don't you ask the media company that made it, because they put that stupid protection scheme on the file. I used a screen capture program, and it didn't work.

    Try http://www.edg3.co.uk/download/050708exercisewlbz.mpg.

It's quite poor quality but the original WMV is such low quality it's difficult to work with!
