    It seems Alexa updated it's ranking algorithms to try and provide more accurate stats. My site went up about 22,000 ranks after it was stuck around the 100k mark for a while. Check out their announcement about it.

    Yeah this is definitely true. I jumped almost 300k from ~800k to ~500k today.

    Looks like I'm at just under 400k now, up from just over 500k before (if I remember correctly, I don't check Alexa very often).

    Why don't you redirect the .com to .org domain avoiding dupe content and splitting the PR? Did I overlook something?

    Your Alexa ranks are nice.

    Those are both pretty good ranks... and considering your traffic is split, you should certainly set up a permanent redirect to your .com domain to combine the traffic.

    The .com domain is the new one that we are using; we've got PR7 on .com/.net/.org so would I see any benefit with the 301 direct?

    Well guys, it just shows that if you mess with something that's not broken then you can screw things up.

    I've implemented the 301 thingy and our PR has dropped. I wish i'd left well alone now. cry

    Dean: It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with that. PR could have detected the use of some non-google text link advertisements or something like that.

    why does google lower the pagerank of a site that uses something like text-link-ads? one of my sites as a pr6 until i added tla, now its a pr3 and has stayed like that over the past two updates :(

    Greg: They put up penalties to everyone they can find who is either buying or selling PR though services like TLA. TLA isn't just an ad, it is a portion of your PR that you sell, which google finds objectionable. The big G hates cheaters, and TLA cheats with paid Search-engine-friendly links. This penalty is to oppose the benifits of the links. I hope that makes sense. [please see Jim's Opinion]

    how does one optimize for alexa rankings... i have been focusing on my pr and i am not even ranked on alexa.

    greg: gnome is absolutely right, TLA offers people a way to buy links for the purpose of increasing their PR and search engine placement. Google frowns on that.

    conartistdesigns: alexa is like the nielsen ratings. People install the Alexa Toolbar and then wherever they go Alexa tracks them, using the data to judge how popular a site is. If you don't mind Alexa being informed of your browsing, get the toolbar (sparky plugin for Firefox) and cast your vote. As a warning, the firefox plugin DRASTICALLY slows browsing in Firefox on Linux. The Windows one works fine.

    i guess that makes sense, but it still sucks. my TLAs currently cover my monthy expenses (and then some), so i could either ditch them and lose out on my own money, or keep them and put up with a halved pagerank.

    if TLA added nofollow to the ad links, would that make the problem go away? (or at least help in making it go away). i guess either way they're gonna be putting people off - with nofollow, people paying for links won't be happy. without it, the people using the ads on their site won't be happy.

    greg: that's exactly the dilemma they face. They don't just sell advertising, they sell a way to raise your page rank, and that's what people pay for. Unfortunately for you (and others using the service), Google doesn't like the idea of people buying PageRank. It makes it lose it's meaning. Who cares if I have a PR 5 if I had to buy my way up from a 3. My page is no more relevant than before, it just ranks better.
