My very professional host Servage just caused several of my posts to get stripped from Google's index.

From my Google Webmaster Tools here is one example:

    http://niemi.it/development/add-meta-description-and-keywords-tags-to-wordpress/ - 403 (Forbidden)

It was indexed before and it ranked very well on search terms link "description and keywords tags for wordpress".

When can I expect it to be included again?

    Keep away from servage.net

google should pick it up on its next crawl of your site. it's already showing up as the third result for 'description and keyword tags for wordpress' :)

You're right greg, they were apparently picked up as we speak.

Anyway, it's does stress the importance of picking a stable host.

couldn't agree more.. i've had so many headaches with webhosting. i'm really happy with what i have now (vps from linode), but i've had a few horror story experiences in the past.

I've heard about linode. Can you tell about your experience with them? Do you have a promotional code to use with them?

linode is awesome - i don't have a promo code, but they're the cheapest vps providers i've come across. i started off with 256BM ram and now i'm up to 360MB for the same price. if it weren't for all the free upgrades i would have perfect uptime. i've been with them for about 11 months and haven't had any major issues. plus i can host anything i want, including irc related stuff, which is great.

Can you host unlimited domains and MySQL domains? Would it be stupid to get involved with without excessive server knowledge?

basically you get root access to the machine, so you can install and host whatever you like. once you've installed apache and mysql (and maybe a control panel like virtualmin to make life easier) you can host as many web sites/domains as you like - your only restrictions are memory, disk space and bandwidth. knowledge doesn't really matter either - there are lots of tutorials on the net for setting stuff up, and if you screw something up you won't get anyone yelling at you, since no other linode customers will be affected.

As greg says, you get root to your virtual machine. The question is just how much you know about maintaining a Linux server. Most of the problems I read about with people getting hacked and having no idea why come from people who aren't familiar with running a webserver.

If you're comfortable with the Linux command line, getting a dedicated server or a VPS (a la Linode) is great. On the other hand, if you don't know the first thing about Linux servers, they're generally a bad idea. (You could sign up with a server admin service like <a href="http://www.platinumservermanagement.com/">Platinum Server Management</a>, although $29/month may be more than you want to spend. Note that I'm not a PSM customer, they were just the first server management company that came to mind.)
