I need to redesign my business cards, but as basically a freelance writer, I haven't a company logo or anything. Usually I just put my name and contact info, but I'm looking for an interesting layout. Any ideas? I want the standard 3.5x2 inch cards. bakie

If you have a book store like Barnes and Nobles in the neighborhood I suggest go reading a book called "The Best Of Business Card Design" (Rockport). It's a bunch of killer designs I tell you.

In the meantime you can check out a few business cards layouts I did for SXSW 08.

Or go check out http://sxswcards.com/ (It's a totally new sites so not so many entries yet)

Hi Payal, I just needed to design some business cards for mom and sister. My were so plain I came up with an idea to take a photo of fabric for background. Turned out nice and not to complicated.

Since I'm a writer, I'm thinking of a pen/paper type of combination. There are some very good ideas in the links.

Here it is! This is just a jpg of the design that my brother-in-law did. They've been printed, and look rather nice. Even though I say so myself wink

here is one I did for mom and sister with the fabric background. It still has the additional border that will be cut for the printers bleed area.

Vistaprint makes nice glossies ... and I THINK there is a code out there that gives you 250 free or something like that (it was a while ago). See fatwallet.com .. they have a 12% cashback offer if you log on to them thru fatwallet ... which is kind of nice ;)

Vistaprint.com is awesome for paper promo materials (bcards) and the like. Sign up for their newsletter and within a few days you should have a coupon (or several) for 250 cards free. I get new ones every few days.

I've used http://www.overnightprints.com/ for several projects. Quality is always very good and I they even reprinted a job for me for free (100% gaurantee) that was my mistake. They also have good down loadable file templates for all common graphics/publishing formats.

    Jan,
I have my own Print Company so let me give you three pieces of good advice, Make the design pertinent, Smart & snappy is better than smug & trendy, Full colour laminated is cheaper than 1 or 2 colour cards.

Well, I got 100 cards printed for about $3.75. Works for me because I needed a few.
  3.
I know the thread is a little old, but I recently got a little inspiration for new cards, wanted feedback before I got them printed, and thought it didn't make a lot of sense to start a new thread.

As for where I order from, I usually use Next Day Flyers, but they are expensive if you want rounded corners, so in that case I use Overnight Prints

That MJ design in brown looks ridiculously gorgeous. Also, while I wouldn't do this randomly, a client of mine does offer business card design software that comes bundled with a logo creator and oodles and poodles of pre-designed templates and logos.

(@Mods - I'm not sure if posting the link like that is OK or not, and if not, I apologize. Just dropping the link since a) it's on topic and b) can prove useful for the designer community here as an aid and/or inspiration. Also trying to be honest/up front about it so no one says I'm trying to be manipulative.)
