I've noticed in the past few days this site loads really slowly and I still cannot get the function "mark all discussions as read" to work properly for me.
I have no trouble with other sites, and I have a cable high speed connection.
what do you think is slowing this site down so much? -

There was this discussion a few weeks back, but I agree. I was excited to be able to check out OD on my new iPhone, but it is painful to load on there. -

Seems to me the forum is slower than the rest of the site. Some integration problems between Vanilla and WordPress? I'm not a programmer so I really don't know. -

It's off and on. At times it's unusably slow (15+ seconds before it starts to load), other times it's snappy as can be. When it's slow, it's the whole site.
Something's got to be done... I'm phasing out an older dedicated server... How much bandwidth does the site use? -

fogster: If you seriously want to host this site, why not get in touch with an administrator. -

The site's bandwidth usage according to Webalizer for January 2008 was roughly 110GB. -

Chris is an administrator. This site is likely to go through between 1.2TB & 1.8TB of bandwidth in the next 12 months. (Quick in-my-head analysis provided that guess) -

It's been extremely slow again, and I've been losing connection constantly, getting a database connection error from vanilla. -

Yep it does seem excessively slow lately... the issue appears to be with the database server as serving up static pages gives no problems. -

They get free hosting and they use a lot of bandwidth. I doubt they will change unless someone else offers free hosting. -

On the WordPress side of things we're doing good and I'm going to install some caching for WordPress as well.
Vanilla seems to be a constant issue for us admins... so we are looking into ways to fix this and/ or possibly move to a different forum software.
Hang in, we are aware of the slowness issues and are working to get it resolved. -

Will Vanilla benefit from MySQL query caching? (Do you have root on the server?) WordPress doesn't so much, but enabling the query cache has really sped up some of my other projects. -

@Sean:
Seriously, if you choose different forum software choose bbPress. Things are looking very good for bbPress in the near future. -

I don't think we should separate forum from design, but I think the idea of not running the forum on WordPress is good and as I can tell by Seans post they should already be working on smth else. -

The design side of the site runs on custom tweaked version WordPress and theme. The forum is using Vanilla and themed to look like the rest of the site design. -

Mine's the same situation as Aaron's I kept getting database errors saying that it could not find the database at (ip address). The interesting thing is when this topic was first posted the site was loading extremely quickly on my end (with in a second). On the other hand I found a great web site for finding out if the site is down for everyone or just you: link. -

i usually get database errors at around 10pm mytime (+9.30GMT) which is weird because that's when most americans are sleeping, so it's unlikely that it's caused by high traffic/demand. perhaps some sort of daily backup is slowing things down? -

I get them all the time, I think it may be time for a dedicated SQL server if everything is running as it should be. I have such a hard time believing that the relevant traffic this website receives is that high... I suspect we have more negative traffic if the owners' hosting provider is truly providing a good service. (They get good up-time, just poor performance.) -

I too get errors every morning about 8 to 10 am Mountain time. Site just will not load or states there is a error. As the day progresses it does start to load but still takes a while (with broadband)
At 10 pm it is loading good now -
