So, would anyone like to volunteer to code one (or more) of these proposed features? Please Contact Joe (Lobsterman) if you are interested. (Sorry, Joe if this wasn't your intention, but I want these features coded, and I suspect some people would love to help out)
    1. Sorted Designs: users need to be able to sort by name, author, total downloads, downloads/day.
    2. Popularity Lists: Galleries including designs with the most downloads/week, downloads/month, downloads/year, and most downloads overall.
    3. Popular Gallery Archive: This would include designs which made it to the top of any popularity list for a length of time (perhaps twice the timespan of the gallery it came from). Designs stay here forever.
    4. Favourites Gallery: Users will need to be able to select their favourite designs, which appear on their user page. Each design keeps track of the number of times it has been favourited (or this could be calculated every month) and the top 1% or so of designs by number of favourites would appear in this gallery. It would also be nice if this is implemented to have favourites be an option when sorting designs.
    5. Design Submissions: Every time a new design in submitted, the designer needs to agree to the design submission guidelines, and all of the 'design info' would be better suited to check boxes instead of select options.

Other moderators/administrators: Feel free to add style="text-decoration: line-through;" to any list-item which is complete.
Joe Says: OD is coded in a complex way, I'm not going to give access to someone who's not serious to commit
EDIT: I renamed the original favourites gallery to a very utilitarian name, which isn't great, but it works.

some new features are comin thats great!

love to help but just can't right now - with work and building a new shop its just crazy - can't wait to see what you come up with :)
  1.
I don't want to sound brash, but are there any perks to doing these? I'll be helping out either way, but right now I can't put off paying work to do so. If there was incentive, I could probably justify it better.

However, like I said, I'll be helping either way. It just depends on how large of a project I can take.

At this point, I'll probably take care of number one. It's a relatively small project. Have Joe send me the necessary files, functions, and database snippets to opendesigns@xavisys.com

Since the site is made off wordpress, couldn't plugins achieve some of the suggested features? Such as rating plugin?

guys, count me in, just mailed joe..
i will be more than happy to contribute :D

its great, that new features are coming :)

kirby145: Having done a very small amount of work on the site before, I can say that it's a VERY customized wordpress install. Many regular WordPress plugins will not work.

Actually, they only have 6 plugins on this site (I don't know how many are activated, but probably all of them). Looks like akismet, Bad Behavior, Google XML Sitemap Generator (nice plugin!), one for theming login and registration pages, and a couple database-related plugins. All the rest of what you see is built into wordpress using the theme, and custom functions.

Glad to see the community stepping up. I'm hopelessly unskilled in these areas, but I would be willing to throw a small donation in to help motivate. I'd quickly throw in $10-15 which isn't much, but if anyone else is willing to chip in, it might add up.
  3.
same here. but i would also love to donate a little something. smile please let me know how.

Hrmmm... I don't know how to work out any payment. I understand why the programmers deserve it, and why designers should be a source for it, but I don't know. You could donate to their respective paypal accounts (if they exist), but I doubt that there will be an official payment scheme for this. Good luck to the programmers, and thank you to all.bakie
  4.
May be we could arrange a paypal account and let all the donations accumulate in it, then share it among the programmers who are working on this. Thoughts ?

I might have some time this weekend to work on it. Do you think that one of the admins could send me a csv with the design statistics so that I have something to work with?

The site is WordPress based, but for example, the designs use a unique database table, so the rating plugin wouldn't know how to do it.

Not too helpful at this point, but something to keep in mind when implementing when considering a OD revamp - implementing that functionality using Drupal would've taken 1 - 3 hours using Drupal's point and click interface (no coding).

what's happened to all the money earned from google ads or kontera? hosting is free, no contests have been held, etc... why not pay coders from that?

theneemies: I somehow doubt this site could be re-done with a point and click interface (initial coding took 2 weeks, with a great deal of other stuff on top).

greg: it doesn't make much sense for some people to be paid for their coding efforts, while the administrators (who have worked for ages, and have put 100's of hours into this site) don't. It isn't like there is an emergency for which we need mercenary (I just mean non-volunteer by that word) programmers to correct in 6 hours. (6 hour deadlines are no fun for anyone). Once we have some new features running, a news post may be in order, hopefully with link love and thanks to the programmers, but as I am only a moderator, I can only suggest, not promise. (We have a lot more power than we are allowed to use).

i only say it because others were talking about donating to the programmers - but since the revenue raised from advertisments is generated by the users, it would seem logical to use this source of money as opposed to donations.

Payment would complicate things. I would see any work provided as a donation of time.

Posted By: gnomeI somehow doubt this site could be re-done with a point and click interface (in drupal)

drupal is much more powerful than wordpress (and rightfully so, they are 2 different breeds) and in the right hands can produce amazing results from little or no coding. i agree with you though gnome- this functionality couldn't be entirely reproduced with drupal with no coding. but as i mentioned, in the right hands i think it could be made close.

if you have patience and your willing to learn it you'll have to see past some of the idiosyncrasies drupal has but in the end it is one hell of a powerful piece of OS software thats capable of much more than most give it credit for...

although i'm all for people getting some cash i have to agree that money will complicate things unless organized properly.

agreed. however maybe some sort of bounty system could be put in place for features? that way anyone (including admins) can claim a 'bounty' when the feature is completed.

I can do any of these, but I can't promise I wont have to disappear off the net like last time I offered to help (Sorry about that by the way, I don't think I ever got around to apologizing for that, had a son born way premature and had to spend three months hospital hopping)

I don't know if that response is based on having actually tried Drupal. A Drupaller familiar with the CCK and Views modules could cook this site's functionality in a few hours, add on a few more for theming. Take it for a spin and post (probably elsewhere as this is slightly offtopic) what your findings are.

I (admittedly) have not tried drupal, I just figured that if it could have been that easy, it would have been done that way. Someone else mentioned that Drupal is actually Object Oriented, so I can guess that it could be far more intuitive and flexible than wordpress.bakie

    the numbers are real.

As for design there isn't onebakie (look at the source)

Posted By: SunRisethe numbers are real.

The numbers might be real, as in they correspond to the correct template, but that is by no means a correct representation of the most downloaded designs.

These are the Top 100 Most Downloaded Design as of Sunday, 27th January 2008 19:54:12 GMT.
