im working on this design, and the feedback i got was,
"i like its simplicity, but i needs to be more professional"
EDIT: the exact feedback was, a user needs to look at it and say "I trust this site, im going to join"
(its for a sp design contest)
it is not complete, and im going to be making some changes, but some feedback is needed.
its supposed to be for a new user-driven car site, similar to autotrader.com
PNG of Design
Im thinking the bottom part needs to go, but thats the only thing im sure on.
Dont be shy with the zoom button. -

May I make a suggestion?
If you are like most people (me included), you might find it had hard to come up with original ideas without first being inspired by people who have alreay been there.
I may be criticised for this, but personally I have never come up with an original idea in my entire life. When I do, I will let you know. But as a rule, everything I have ever done or tried to create was inspired by something I saw. I freely and humbly admit this, though it pains me to do so.
I looked at your site and personally I loved it. After all, what is professional? I love SeanRox's site! But with all do respect, if I were to categorize it I would not choose the word "professional" even though Sean is clearly a professional designer. I would use words like powerful, progressive, artistic, orgininal etc.
I think Sean's site is one of the best sites I have ever seen. I have told him so, too, so I hope is not offended by my take on it.
I like your site! It is crip, clean and has focus. I am not sure what I would change, but if I was not pleased with it, and if it were my job to design it, I would look at other sites and see what "grabs" me and use that as a spring board to something I liked more. I would talk to the people that designed it and ask how they achieved this or that result.
As an aside, I might suggest that you can make a site look so savvy that the design itself takes away from the content. This is one of the problems I have with my own site LOL believe it or not. And I am not sure what I will do about it. Anyway, I digress.
I am a newbie to this community, and I am sure other people have great ideas, so take mine with a grain of salt.
But I think if you are looking for "professional feel" you might keep in mind that most business sites use some form of dark text on white background (or as close to white as possible) with a left-hand sidebar (sometimes a left as well as right sidebar).
here is a link that may be helpful

Wow, Im not the only one! Im also like that.
Anyway, about your design, I suggestion a darker background. And I would also add more of the same colours. Example: I would add a darker blue in the middle where the buyer column is. Just simple colour touch ups to give it a more 'professional' feel.... in my humble opinion. -

The design is really nice, but i'd work on the typography a bit.
1. The logo, the idea is good, the exact font isn't great. You need something a bit more professional. same style, just a bit more flowing.
2. the 1.2.3 wrong font, and the shadow doesn't really work there. you need something bolder
3. you need to apply some minimum style to the links on top (at least make them bold) -

Also, sprinkle tons of graffiti-like profanity all over your site. That really grabs peoples attention.
OK don't do that. I am only teasing. Just trying to add some humor to the mix. Sorry.
Speaking of humor....why not find a way to do that. And I am serious here.
I realize it is a fine line, but people love to smile and feel good. It is something I am beginning to focus on at my site.
I think if you can inject some of your own vibrant personality into your site, via some of your humor, people are drawn to that. Anyone disagree with me on this? Agree?
I am reminded of Click and Clack, the tappit brothers of Car Talk fame.
