Looks like pagerank update has started after a long long time:

Opendesigns.org has moved from 6 to 7. Congrats! On par with oswd and owd now!

    Attackr.com is now PR 6.

Our own Sumanasa.com has moved from 3 to 5.

That is down from 8, and it is because he has a low oxygen level in his blood, a condition known as Anaemia. It really slows a person down, and saps all of their energy. Any number of things can cause it, which means it takes some time to figure out how to fix it. This has hit him pretty hard, and knocked him mostly out of commission.

His site has been losing popularity for over a year, because he makes fewer posts each month (and I have data to support that statement too), but it takes the PR several months to catch up. He also hasn't posted new templates in a while, or even uploaded them all here, so he loses ground to others.

My favorite page rank checker: Google toolbar. Just enable "page rank" in the settings; you'll see page rank instantly in the toolbar for every page you visit.

I use one that I have installed on my server that gives some more info other than just the PR. Try it out if you would like: PageRank Checker

According to Check Page Rank, my site (dannisbet.com) has a PR of 3. I guess thats not bad, considering it was 0 the last time I checked; but I'm still confused as to how this whole pagerank stuff works. Is there any good reading material for someone who's not so code savvy (I'm a graphic designer! lol) to get up to par on how I can optimize my website?

"Once you've selected the best category for your site, go directly to that category on dmoz.org and then click "suggest URL." Follow the instructions on the submission form carefully. De&#115criptions of sites should describe the content of the site concisely and accurately."

    Quoted from: http://www.dmoz.org/add.html
  4.
heh. I've been trying for years to get my site listed in dmoz. It appears that they are so backlogged by submissions, and not enough editors, that they don't have time to add sites to the index.

So volunteer to become an editor, eh? Good luck. I tried twice to volunteer, and never heard anything back. bah.

As far as the OP's comment on PR, I have a site which is updated regularly, with *tons* of content, and the pagerank went down one notch, while another site, with static content stayed the same. Go figure.
  5.
hmm i am also a bit confused about this PR. certainly the PR has increased, However i don't see an increase in visitors. In fact when i had about 80 unique visitors per day, my PR was 3. Now i have about 40 or less unique visitors per day and the PR is 5! how is that ? Is google PR mostly based on the inbound links ? on the brighter side, my website has started appearing in 3rd and 4th pages for lots of keywords including "free css template". kind of confusing. bakie

Thanks for the update Sumanasa, I wouldn't have noticed. My site which is just some informations about myself (no templates, no articles, no link bait at all) went from 0 to 4 - very surprising.

Posted By: ramblingsoulIs google PR mostly based on the inbound links ?

Yes! Everyone seems to agree on this. But it's still being discussed whether Google use site statistics such as the amount of daily visitors and bounce rate to modulate PageRanks.

Still seeing Andreas as PR5 here.

I was always leery of selling links so obviously.

My site (Aaron's Thoughts) went up to a PR of 4...it was 0 last I checked. I rarely ever post, but a couple of them are fairly popular I guess. I only get about 130-150 hits per day, and practically no incoming links.

Hmm strange... My site has never really been updated that much and it's been a holding page for ages now but it is still PR6.

I have never had a blog or anything on there, it's just been a place to showcase my portfolio and that's it.

This PR stuff always confuses me (not that i'm complaining of course tongue) ...

I think it must be the backlinks that influence the PR,. My website hasn't been updated since the beginning of the year and my PR just went up from 2 to 4. And it's a Flash site, so there's definitely no SEO at work there!

Yes, sudden drop for me, like people have warned me about for 2,5 years now. I guess that can happen if you choose another advertisement option than Google AdSense and happen to work with web design. :)

No, seriously... Knowing that lots of people have reported me to Google for having the guts to have advertisements from Text-Link-Ads.com (an ad company I found through the Weblog Tools Collection, by the way), I have sticked to my view for a long time now. I've tried to make the web a better place by promoting web standards, free templates and quality code. But AdSense kicked me out of their program - so I chose another advertisement option.

Text links have worked amazingly well for 1,5 years now, without any penalties or evil from Google. I haven't cheated or abused Google in anyway, and I haven't violated their guidelines (atleast not what I know about) since I learned about them. I try to keep everyone happy, including Google, since my target is to help as many people as possible and Google is easily the single biggest source of new template users that I have.

However, like gnome wrote above, I haven't taken any good care of my website in the last year. To put it in a honest and simple way: I haven't taken good care of anything at all, since I've been out of energy for a long time. No new work, very few posts, no major improvements in the design, no optimization...

Now I'm on a treatment that is slowly making me feel better again, and I feel the inspiration coming back - more and more every day. I have designed two new templates, and even started recording music again. I'm preparing for launching a new company, have recently made both TV and newspaper appearances here in Sweden talking about free templates and how they can be used.

And I have started blogging again. Slowly, but atleast moving forward. Hopefully. With a new site design in the works, I hope to start earning my Google love back again. Not that I am unhappy about a PR5, but I'm hoping to make a living from giving away my work for free when I get well again - and having Google rank a site high is a key to making that possible.

Sorry for the long and mostly unrelated and egocentric post, I promise to not do it again!

Btw, if you want to get a good overview of pagerank changes, try SmartPageRank.com - it is a good tool to see the PR on multiple datacenters, incoming links and other things on the same page...

I didn't even use TLA, but sold links privately and I went from PR6 to PR5...however, more important than Google PR is the fact that I have more traffic, more paying customers because of several keyword phrases/searches listing me in the top 10 on Google..so take that Google! Don't place more importance on a PR ranking than it deserves.

I'm actually annoyed with Google the same way I was annoyed with Microsoft and stopped using IE. It just so happens that I have more backlinks with Yahoo anyway...so I don't think I have to worry too much...contrary to what people think, Google is not "god" in SEO world...I so hate monopolies or dictatorships...btw angry

I don't worry too much about PR or SEO or anything like that. I don't put any effort really into it on my own site. But, that last time I checked my PR, it was a 3. Just checked it now....it's a 5. Not bad for not doing much with it.

However, I should add that my contributions on sNews probably have a large impact on this.

Google only shows a sampling of backlinks as part of their effort to keep people from gaming the serps.

Trin: Does that mean that the number of "inlinks" that Yahoo reports is closer to the actual number? Is it from unique sites, or from unique pages where many pages can be on the same domain?

I have always thought that the backlinks number that Google writes out for my website is from unique sites, while Yahoo has been pages instead.

If the Yahoo number is unique sites, the number becomes too big to be correct. There is simply no way that there could be more than a million sites that use my templates so if anyone who knows how Yahoo counts, please let me know.

(sorry for getting a bit out of the topic!)

Google is far from a monopoly. There are many different search engines out there. It just happens that the 'public' has made them very popular, but monopoly? no way. Google is nothing like Microsoft in that respect. You can't blaim Google for being very very good that makes them number one. And as far as being a dictator... ummm , no. We have a choice we either google or we don't. blaming Google for being so popular is like blaming yourself for being such a good designer smile

Andreas: This link may help regarding Google.... I pay much less attention to the other SE's.

Perthmetro: G may not be a monopoly yet, but with well over half of all internet searches being performed through G, it certainly is the SE you must pay the most attention to if traffic matters to you.

BTW... Do no evil is an anagram of “o no devil”. devil
