But I'm amazed here at how many young programming php and design gurus there are. I mean where on earth did these guys get so good so quickly! Jealous? you bet. I'm 38 now and I'm still chuffed I could do the following on my old Commodore 64 when I was their age.
10 hello world

Pete - when I was 15 (I'm now 48) I knew computers only from SciFi movies. The times have massively changed. I had my first computer (ATARI), when I was about 30!
These young guys today grow up with that kind of stuff (computer, internet, wikipedia etc.) and they learn very, very fast. With one mouse click you can have any information you want. Isn't it crazy today and how wonderful?
My kids are 13 (son) and 16 (daughter) and at the age of 8 e.g. my son installed the computers in his school, because his "old" teachers weren't able to do it. WITH 8! He just watched me how to do it and he learned - very fast!
And I love the young guys here in this community, how they benefit from the experience of the elder members and how fast they learn. Great!
I was also for long years a teacher with all my heart and I always loved it to teach young people.
These young guys are our future and remember the mission of TODC: we want to make the internet/the world a prettier place.
In Germany we say: "Today is a wonderful day, to learn something new!" So always visit TODC! At least I do it every morning at first to see, what these guys here are doing - and I'm also still learning.
!
BTW: I'm not jealous - as I said, I love to see so much talents!
Cheers

8 years old and a consultant hardware network specialist! Now if we can teach them how to negotiate a consultancy fee! My 3 year old son can play with a mouse and use Tux Paint. I'm waiting for his Nanna to come over so he can teach her ;) -

Hello, I love all these young smart people. I being 34, have a son who is 11. I see it as a learning experience with the bonus of free labor. Instead of saying "go mow the lawn" because we don't have a lawn, its go fix those photos for me. I need them converted to black/white. Set the black to be black and the white to be white. There may be like 34 photos for a newspaper to be done. Sharpen the pictures and increase the dpi.
*giggles* Nothing like having children who not only love being on your computers but having them do a little work at the same time. Want some screen time, fix my photos first. Then have at it!
*laugh* -

34 & 38 old?
I'm 34, but I'm not old....damnit! I also know a far share of PHP. You can learn it to guys. It's honestly not that difficult. I learned it to create a website for my brother-in-law (which was never done as he dropped the idea), now I use it almost daily creating sites for my clients, helping out with sNews and anything else I'd like. Once you learn it, you open yourself up to a whole lot of possibilities. Give it shot!
My boys are too young to mow the lawn just yet, but my 4 and 6 yr olds, know how to load their games, use MS Paint and some other things. Their mother is afraid of them getting to be like me :) -

Ey Bob - I'm also not feeling old with 48. In my brain I'm - let's say about 25 - only my bones feel sometimes like 48
. I'm too young too die and never too old for Rock 'n' Roll!

Along the lines of "What kind of a world will our children live in..."
check out this youtube video
It really gets you thinking about our kids future, technology, the dinosaur era public schools (USA)
it is good.
Matt (40)
Noah (4)
Melody (6 months)
p.s. Pete, I swear I am going to get my PHP site up soon to help all the PHP newbies because bob is right, it really is not that hard. -

Along these same lines ("How kids will learn") check out this great article by one of my all time favorite writers, Seth Godin. If you don't know him, you should.

Hey Matt...are you going it alone on your PHP n00b site or are you looking for any contributors? I'd be happy to write some articles up if you need any assistance. -

Well, I was going to go it alone to start and then open the door if there was interest, but it is going so slowly maybe I will open the door now!
I was also going to do all video but again getting back to the slow part - it is not happening like I thought it was going to.
I have lately been thinking of doing part video and part text. It is a little more flexible that way. Also, I would probably get it going sooner.
I have the domain and WP going already and the first lesson series coded.
Lets talk, eh?
I will send you an email.
Now I have completely hijacked this thread! -

Haha, that sounds familiar. My dad is forever asking me to create websites for these amazing ideas he has. I design them and then that's as far as they get because he moves on to a new idea! He's a nightmare to work with. Kinda feel obliged though since I wouldn't be in the industry if it wasn't for him

Sup guys,it is plexihack,I forgot my pass :D
Last year, when I was 13,on Informatic class we had a QBASIC programming lesson.Since I already knew it and my teacher saw me bored,he told me to teach instead. He went to Teacher Room and I was a teacher for 5 school hours and teached my class basics of QBASIC.
I know PHP,HTML,CSS...this is nothing for me,it is just too easy. Now I want to learn asm,c++,c##...I believe in open source,so I wish one day I will have a big company which will discover and employe open source programmers.I will soon start making open source templates.
It is not true that kids of today are more advanced. We have computers, but many of us don't have the brains to use them,so they just play games.
I am planning on starting a LG (Lil' Geek) portal for smart kids who like computers, technology, science and geeky stuff.I don't like seeing kids who are smart like me (I can say I am smart,I solved IQ test (one in school) with all correct answers and I was bored while other kids were writing it)
waste their intelligence on stupid things and destroy their lives with drugs and alcohol.
By the way,we are Indigo and you are not :P

Wow arwen, I wish my mom was like that. Whenever I do anything for her on the computer, she says I'm always "moving way too fast!"
All you "old" parents out there
, don't get distressed. This is happening, on a smaller scale, between me and my brother. I'm 19 (20 for all intents and purposes), and he still teaches me a thing or two even though he's 15. Proves it doesn't take a 20 year gap to miss some new technology...

I got into web design when I was 13, but never really did much with it. Then I did a career analizer thing in middle school that showed me the estimated salary of a web designer in 2004 (The year I graduated from High School) and decided to make it a career.
I haven't yet broken it from part-time to full-time, but this winter I just may. -

I'm not old *gasp at thought*, I'm going to be 32 soon... and am by far the most technical person in the family! Though I have to say, my mother's taken to computers like a fish to water! *looks around to see if she's around on TODC* She's a gaming freak (!!) and each time I visit her, she's learnt something new! I'm waiting for her to make inroads into my web design work.
My dad on the other hand... he's the sort who needs printouts of e-mails... -
