Right, just thought I'd kick off a new topic as we're all keen to get started on this new site after whats happened with OpenWebDesign.org as far as I can tell... so... the design of the new site... what do people think it should be like?
I would say something like the usage on [http://www.cssremix.com/] would be good as I reckon we should try and have quite a few designs on the main page, this also means we can update faster if required, whilst still keeping designs on the main page for a while as their is more room for them. Although I don't honestly like the thin double sidebars and would opt for a single sidebar and large content area, what do others want the site to be like? -

I would think some thing similar to what you think Christopher.
Maybe have the basic page lay out look some thing like the Standards Reboot home page.

I think we should agree on a layout, make a contest, and then leave the design to the designers' creativity and imagination. -

A contest, once again a great idea by LobsterMan -

I'm thinking left-aligned fixed width 950px, with the most important stuff within the 800px limit for users with smaller screens. any other suggestions? -

% width. it makes it more challenging, and fits onto any screen. margin: 10%; on the body gives plenty of whitespace... it takes a bit more trickery to round corners and the like, but the results can be astounding. -

My problem with elastic designs is that the content gets so messed up sometimes, it's really hard to control, and for a site that will hopefully have many different features, we need full control. -

A contest for the design would bring in a pile of submissions. the problem there could be in the judging. with an elastic layout, you are right that content can sometimes be restricted in alignment techniques, but JayKay has a design with fluid width that looks really impressive, and most of my (not so impressive) designs are measured in either em, or %. It can be done. -

yep contest is a great idea as it really fits the group unity type community, if it a user-member voting contest. similar to the domain voting thing that was done -

I have been working on a mock-up design that I will release tonight for you guys to have a look at. -

I'd love to see it.
Maybe to save time, the contest will be on photoshop mockups, and then only the winning design will get coded -

Good Idea LobsterMan. I can help with the coding part. -

I also created a simple totally style-less layout for the temporary site till we finish the design contest. I didn't use any colors or anything, so it'll be obvious that it's temporary.

I'd hope it would be a while (meaning a month?) for the deadline, we haven't even got a shell and system running yet (as far as i'm aware anyway) so we can't skin it immediately anyway.
also with quite a relaxed deadline (if everyone agrees on a relaxed deadline that is) hopefully it will encourage more people to have a go and present their thoughts and ideas as they don't have to rush through with the first idea they have. -
