I am working on the design for a website that I will start coding in October. The site is being made free of charge for a friend, so its no hurry, but I still want it to look nice.
---->>LINKY<<----
I put the link above. Tell me what you think. I want REAL criticism so be as mean as you can because I want the design to be good before I start the coding.
THANKS in advance,
SunRise
P.S. I like bradm81's new design!

Nice monochrome colors, indeed. Even the header image is matching the color scheme pretty good. Could really be nice if you made a series of images in Flash. Changing as you navigate. Like some motion tweens from 0-100% Alpha colors at 30 FPS. Could get pretty nice.
Just say if you need some help with it. -

I was thinking the same thing, but I don't know how to make the image change in flash.

I mean as users navigate around on your page clicking "selling", "finance" and so on, the image should change to something appropriate. I can send you a .fla file with an example of how to do the tweenings? -

Looks good, Sunrise. Very simple and elegant. I wonder as well what the navigation will do on hover or when you're on that particular page. Probably just an underline would go well with the rest of the design. Also, instead of reproducing the title text in the header, maybe it would look good to put a very transparent image there, like leaves or trees or something.Posted By: SunRise

I have been using a javascript slideshow to produce the same effect. It might have a larger share on visitors computers, but mostly I just find it's lighter and easier to work with. You can see an example of it on a site I'm working on for a church here.Posted By: SunRise

nice design. I like it..
a suggestion - reduce exposure of that dropshadow on the header. somehow it is grabbing my attention than the logo. -

Sunrise: I'd like to see that outer border continue all the way around, and I actually don't like the curved bottom of the image, although I'm not sure if straightening the image is the solution either.
Bradm81: it looks as good as the mockup. Impressive frog. -

@ everyone: thanks for the comments
@ bradm81: I will look into doing it with javascript
@ gnome: I think you don't like the curve because it looks 'edgy' rather than 'smooth' --- @ everyone: Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
PS: I going to try to learn to use mootools because I think their cool! -

very nice indeed, I can see this for a country inn, bed and breakfast- or anything that has 'heritage' in its name. I do happen to like the curve, think it rather 'makes' the overall look. and if you include a blockquote area and those other fun things, I'll download it in a heartbeat. -

Sunrise: you could try to take the original image at a MUCH higher resolution, do all the stuff there (line, curves, star), and then scale it down when you finish, using cubic interpolation. -

Gnome- just for my edification - how can you tell what the image resolution is currently? this is not in 'properties'or- how do you know that the resolution is not high enough? the image appears ok to me, except the - dont know what to call it- jagged edge at the bottom. does that give it away? just curious to know.

My BAD EXPLANATION:
The resolution (or dimensions of the image) is merely the size of it (for practical purposes in web design it is, anyways). If SunRise were to put the detail at a considerably higher resolution (meaning at a higher level of detail), his Graphics program would use very good data to draw the curved bottom. When the resolution is reduced (scaling the image down, making it smaller, and less detailed), the cubic interpolation (which is an algortrithm for changing the size of an image) can do a great job of removing any jaggies (as they are informally called, at least in the circles I move in).
This is a fairly technical topic, and SunRise's graphic program may provide a far slicker method to achieve this, although I know that mine does not, so I have presented a way to possibly fix that which is most likely to work and be doable in any graphics program. -

I fixed it. What I did was:
-make copy of the mock-up
-crop the curved portion
-multiply the size by 10
-redraw the curve and line
-resize by .1x
-and then pasted it back on the mock-up
This fixed the problem for the curve, and the line under it looks almost perfect.
Thanks for the tip gnome!

I am also making a site for individual houses using the same design as the home512 site (512 is our area code). Here is a link to one of the sites (still under development).
The thing I am having problems with is making the text next to the main image look nice. Do you have any tips?
Thanks for the help OD

If you head on over to take a peek at Andreas Viklund's templates, you could take a peek at how Andreas02 is styled. In my opinion, it might look better with darker text (increased contrast to draw the eye), bolded or otherwise-emphasised price (because that is the most important bit of information on the page), and perhaps a sans-serif font. I am not sure about the font, but the contrast should help. -

Thanks for your continued support!
(especially gnome)
andreas02 looks good and I will try to incorporate the same style into the site i am working on. The main thing that I am wondering is what font to use, since it needs to be compatible yet still look good. What font would you use?
thnks,

You might want to use Arial, or Verdana. Somewhere in the free resources I believe that there is a list of the most popular installed fonts. -
